Completed Electrical Upgrade in Durham, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch recently completed a code-focused subpanel installation and whole‑home surge protection for Open Door (LWO Team #16 - Glory) in Durham, NC. Led by Jared Mata, this project expanded circuit capacity, organized critical loads, and added robust protection against damaging power surges.
- Location: Durham, NC
- Branch: Raleigh
- Primary category: Panels & Service Upgrades
- Secondary category: Subpanel Installation
- Date completed: December 31, 2025
Scope of Work
- Midsized indoor subpanel (12/24, up to 125A): Installed and permitted to provide room for new and future circuits. This subpanel scope included permitting. Conduit, feeder, and trenching were not part of this subpanel package, and grounding for detached structures was not included. Breakers were added as separate items for this project.
-
Breakers installed for dedicated circuits:
- 1× 25A double‑pole breaker, suitable for a small condenser, well pump, or small mini‑split.
- 4× 20A standard breakers for small appliance loads.
- 5× 15A standard breakers for bathroom lighting (2020 code) and standard branch circuits.
- Whole‑home surge protector: Mounted at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage to ground, helping shield the home’s wiring, breakers, outlets/switches, and hard‑wired equipment from surges caused by lightning events, utility fluctuations, or equipment cycling. The device includes a $10,000 / 3‑year warranty against covered home appliances in the unlikely case of failure. Claims are secondary to the homeowner’s insurance; direct lightning strikes are excluded. “Covered Equipment” includes major appliances and many hard‑wired devices when protected by a properly connected SPD. Security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
- On‑site team: Lead electrician with an assisting wireman/apprentice to ensure an efficient, clean installation and thorough testing.
Why This Upgrade Matters
Adding a properly sized subpanel creates space for new circuits and helps isolate critical loads, improving reliability and reducing nuisance trips. With new 25A, 20A, and 15A breakers, this Durham home has clearer power distribution for appliances, bathroom lighting, and HVAC‑adjacent equipment, all aligned with current electrical standards.
The whole‑home surge protector provides a vital layer of defense for sensitive electronics, HVAC components, and everyday appliances. By safely shunting excess voltage to ground before it spreads through the system, it helps extend equipment life and reduce the risk of costly damage.
Code and Inspection Considerations
As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, some homes may require AFCI upgrades on certain circuits. In older wiring systems, adding AFCI protection can reveal preexisting conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause immediate tripping. When this occurs, it can require detailed diagnostics (for example, opening devices along the affected circuits) to locate and correct the issue. Our team plans installations with these possibilities in mind and coordinates with inspectors to keep your project moving smoothly.
