Touchstone Electric recently completed a Level 2 EV charger installation and whole-home surge protection upgrade for a homeowner in Durham. Completed on August 7, 2026, this project was handled by our Raleigh branch with lead technician Brad Williams. The scope included pulling the required electrical permit, installing a dedicated 50-amp 240V circuit for a customer-supplied EV charger, and protecting the home’s electrical system with a panel-mounted surge protective device.

What we installed
- Electrical permit: We filed the electrical permit with the county to ensure the project followed local code requirements.
- Dedicated Level 2 EV circuit: A new 50-amp 240V circuit with a 50A breaker and properly sized 6/3 NM-B wiring was installed to safely power the EV charger.
- Customer-supplied EV charger: The Level 2 charger was mounted and connected to the new circuit for reliable at-home charging.
- Whole-home surge protection: We installed a panel-mounted surge protector that diverts excess voltage to ground, helping to shield the home’s electrical system and connected equipment from damaging surges.

The installed surge protector includes a $50,000 / 10-year appliance coverage benefit in the unlikely event of protector failure. It’s designed to help protect your home’s electrical system and covered equipment from voltage spikes caused by lightning-related surges, utility issues, or large appliances cycling on and off.
Covered equipment examples include many household items when protected by the properly connected device: washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit located inside the house, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, breakers and electrical system components, and hardwired appliances/devices such as built-in microwaves, furnaces, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, and home/landscape lighting.
- Claims are secondary to your existing insurance policy.
- Excludes direct lightning strikes.
- Security systems and medical equipment are not covered.
Permitting and local compliance in Durham
We pulled the electrical permit required for this project. Please note: every jurisdiction can have additional requirements. The included permit covers electrical work only. If other non-electrical permits are required (such as Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, separate subcontractor, or builder permits), those are not included. If additional permits are needed, we’ll advise you on what to handle and can provide pricing to process any non-electrical permits upon request.
