Durham Electrical Panel Upgrade & Whole-Home Surge Protection

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a permitted, inspected, and warrantied electrical panel upgrade with surge protection for Stanford & Lorraine Wiley in Durham, NC. Completed on October 13, 2025, this project brought the home’s service equipment up to current electrical code, improved safety, and added robust protection against damaging power surges.

What We Upgraded and Installed

Permit and Inspection: Full permitting and inspection were included to verify code compliance and workmanship.
200A Main Electrical Panel (Outdoor, Aluminum Bus): Removed the existing panel and installed a new 200-amp main panel. We grounded and bonded the new panel, labeled all circuits, reconnected the service-entrance conductors, and reconnected existing branch circuits to current standards.
Feeder Conductors: Installed 2/0 THHN conductors sized for 200-amp service for a reliable, code-compliant connection.
New Standard Breakers: Replaced/added breakers as needed for safe, organized power distribution, including:
- Two 40A breakers
- Two 30A double-pole breakers
- Nine 20A breakers
- Seven 15A breakers
Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a panel-mounted surge protective device with $50,000 equipment coverage for 10 years, helping shield appliances, electronics, and system components from voltage spikes.
Power Planning: During the scheduled outage, we made a generator available for limited essential power to minimize disruption.

Code, Safety, and AFCI Readiness

As Durham-area inspectors implement NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may be required to upgrade certain circuits to AFCI protection. In rare cases, preexisting conditions like shared neutrals can cause nuisance tripping and may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Surge Protection Warranty: The whole-home SPD provides $50,000 in coverage for 10 years on covered equipment in the unlikely event of SPD failure. Claims are secondary to your insurance policy and direct lightning strikes are excluded.

Covered equipment commonly includes items like refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, disposals, stoves, HVAC equipment located inside the home, wiring, outlets/switches, electrical system components, and hardwired devices such as built-in microwaves and lighting when properly connected to the surge protector. Security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
