Project overview
Our Charlotte team completed a residential electrical upgrade in Troutman, NC for customer John Solberg on January 8, 2025. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project focused on reliable power for a garage freezer, enhanced surge protection at the main panel, and improved grounding for whole-home safety.

What we installed
- Dedicated 15-amp garage freezer circuit: We furnished and installed a new 15A circuit with a single-yoke receptacle dedicated to the freezer. The run originated at the outdoor panel and was routed through flexible protective conduit (carflex) in the garage cabinet to the freezer location. The circuit was completed with a 15A breaker and 14/2 NM-B wiring for a safe, reliable connection.
- Whole-home surge protector: A panel-mounted surge protection device was installed to help divert excess voltage to ground, shielding the home’s electrical system and connected equipment from lightning-related surges, utility fluctuations, and equipment cycling.
- Second ground rod: We added an additional ground rod and ensured a continuous grounding electrode conductor back to the main service panel, strengthening the home’s grounding system for safety and code adherence.

Garage freezers can draw significant current during compressor start-up. Placing the freezer on a dedicated 15A circuit reduces nuisance trips, minimizes voltage drop, and helps protect your food from unexpected power interruptions caused by shared loads. Typical covered equipment includes a washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit located inside the house, trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, and a stove with a built-in microwave. Security systems and medical equipment are not covered.
Grounding upgrades improve safety
A robust grounding system provides a low-impedance path for fault currents and helps surge protection devices work effectively. By adding a second ground rod and ensuring a proper, continuous grounding electrode conductor to the main service, we enhanced the home’s overall electrical safety and performance.
