Dedicated Appliance Circuits & GFCI Outlet Installation in Raleigh

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a focused kitchen power upgrade for The Flying Biscuit Cafe in Raleigh, NC. Led by technician Patrick Burke, this project delivered reliable power for multiple high-demand appliances by adding three 20-amp dedicated circuits for waffle makers and a 30-amp three-phase circuit for a commercial dishwasher. The work was completed on June 26, 2024 by our Raleigh branch.

For busy kitchens, dedicated circuits and proper GFCI protection are essential to keep equipment running safely and to reduce nuisance tripping. Our crew installed new wiring and EMT conduit to protect conductors, improve durability, and keep the workspace organized.

Scope of Work

  • Installed three individual 20A dedicated small-appliance circuits for waffle makers to prevent overloads and ensure reliable performance.
  • Added a 30A three-phase circuit for a commercial dishwasher, providing the correct voltage and balanced power for consistent operation.
  • Integrated GFCI protection on the 20A circuits serving receptacles in kitchen areas where moisture is present.
  • Routed and secured new conductors in 3/4" EMT conduit with appropriate fittings for a clean, serviceable installation.
  • Made final appliance connections for one major appliance (dishwasher) and three small appliances (waffle makers).

Materials and Components Used

  • MC 12/2 wire for the 20A dedicated appliance circuits.
  • MC 10/3 wire for the 30A three-phase dishwasher circuit.
  • 20A GFCI breakers for added personnel protection on kitchen receptacle circuits.
  • 30A breaker with appropriate overcurrent protection for the dishwasher circuit.
  • 3/4" EMT conduit with connectors, supports, and LBs for a durable, code-conscious pathway.
  • Appliance terminations for one major and three small customer-supplied appliances.
  • Custom configuration to accommodate a 30A three-phase setup at the service panel.

Why Dedicated Circuits and GFCI Matter in Kitchens

High-wattage appliances like waffle makers and dishwashers draw significant current. Placing each on its own dedicated circuit helps prevent breaker trips, minimizes voltage drop, and protects sensitive electronics inside the equipment. For wet and spill-prone areas, GFCI protection adds a crucial safety layer by monitoring current and quickly cutting power if a ground fault is detected.

In restaurants and commercial-style kitchens, three-phase power is commonly used for larger appliances because it delivers smoother, more efficient power delivery under heavy loads. Pairing the correct wire size, breaker rating, and conduit method ensures the circuit can handle the sustained demand safely and reliably.

Project Outcome

The Flying Biscuit Cafe now has properly sized, dedicated circuits that match the electrical requirements of their waffle makers and commercial dishwasher. The EMT conduit provides a clean, protected path for conductors and supports long-term serviceability. With GFCI protection where applicable, the installation supports both performance and safety for day-to-day operations.
