Project overview
Touchstone Electric completed a dedicated 50A RV outlet installation in Catawba, NC, as part of our Outlets & Switches service category (Outlet Installation & Repair). This project, completed in April 2025 by our Charlotte team out of the Matthews branch, provided homeowner Greg Harris with a safe, reliable connection for an RV parking space. Technicians Easton Mitchell and Robert Sloan handled the installation from trenching to final testing.
The goal was to deliver a robust, code-conscious solution that keeps high-demand RV loads off general-use circuits, reduces nuisance tripping, and offers a clean, convenient hookup point outdoors.
Scope of work in Catawba, NC
- Dedicated 50A circuit: Installed a new 50-amp breaker in the main panel to power the RV receptacle on its own circuit.
- Trenching: Excavated approximately 60 feet at a target depth of 18–24 inches to route the new electrical run to the RV parking area.
- Conductor run: Pulled approximately 70 feet of #6 THHN conductors to support the 50A load and help minimize voltage drop over the distance.
- Mounted receptacle post: Set a 4x4 wood post in concrete to create a sturdy, dedicated mounting location for the outdoor RV outlet.
- Outlet installation: Installed and terminated the 50A RV receptacle at the post, with neat, labeled routing from the panel to the pedestal.
- Crawl-space improvements: Added a keyless light in the crawl space for better visibility and installed a standard switch for user-friendly control.
- Routing solution: Performed a crawl diagnostic and extension to navigate structural constraints and reach the optimal outlet location.
Because the property already had incoming feeders and low-voltage lines in the ground, the crew trenched with extra care to protect existing utilities and maintain clear, well-documented routing.
Safety and installation considerations
Before any digging, homeowners should call 811 to have utilities marked. Trenching at 18–24 inches helps protect conductors from damage and supports long-term reliability. Our team verified secure terminations, proper grounding and bonding, and used outdoor-appropriate materials for weather resistance at the mounted post.
A dedicated 50A circuit ensures the RV outlet is isolated from household lighting and receptacle circuits, supporting stable power for high-demand equipment. Using appropriately sized conductors for the distance helps maintain performance when RV systems draw heavier loads.
