Project overview: dedicated 15-amp water heater circuit in Charlotte, NC
Our Charlotte branch (based out of Matthews) completed a focused Outlets & Switches service for homeowner Aaron Roland on September 13, 2024. Technician Josh Key ran a new dedicated 15-amp circuit for a water heater, added a GFCI outlet, and protected the run with liquid-tight conduit for durability and code compliance. This job falls under our Outlet Installation & Repair services and was performed in Charlotte, NC.
Adding a dedicated circuit and GFCI protection helps ensure safe, reliable operation for water-heating equipment, reducing nuisance trips on shared circuits and meeting electrical safety standards around water sources.
What we installed
- 15A breaker: A standard 15-amp breaker was installed at the panel to supply a dedicated branch circuit for the water heater.
- GFCI receptacle with cover: A new GFCI outlet provides essential ground-fault protection; a bubble cover offers weather-resistant, in-use protection where needed.
- Liquid-tight flex conduit (1/2"): Flexible, sealproof conduit safeguards conductors in areas exposed to moisture or movement.
- THHN #14 conductors: Properly sized conductors for a 15-amp circuit, pulled to the new location and terminated to spec.
- Professional wire fishing: We carefully fished conductors through hard-to-reach sections to minimize disruption and maintain a clean finish.
- Appliance hookup: Connection for the customer-supplied water heater, including correct device terminations and labeling.
Following installation, we performed functional checks to verify breaker operation and GFCI trip performance.
Why a dedicated 15-amp circuit matters
- Safety: Isolating the water heater on its own circuit helps prevent overloading and reduces the chance of overheating conductors or tripping unrelated outlets and lights.
- Code-minded protection: A GFCI outlet adds a critical layer of protection in moisture-prone areas by rapidly cutting power during a ground fault.
- Equipment performance: Dedicated power supports consistent operation and can extend equipment life by reducing voltage fluctuations.
- Serviceability: Clear labeling and a standalone breaker make future maintenance faster and simpler.
