Touchstone Electric upgraded service for homeowner Chris Poplin by installing a new 200A outdoor subpanel and a code-compliant 200A exterior service disconnect. This project improves system safety, provides capacity for future loads, and brings the home into alignment with the latest electrical code requirements adopted in the Concord area.
What we installed
- 200A outdoor subpanel with full permitting and inspection coordination for a compliant, weather-rated installation.
- 200A exterior service disconnect to meet NEC 2020 requirements for an outside emergency shutoff. We separated neutrals and grounds as required and set the disconnect as the service’s main point.
- New 4‑wire feeder using SER 4/0 (15 ft) from the main disconnect to the subpanel for proper equipment grounding and neutral isolation.
- Breakers added and organized:
- One 50A standard breaker (typical for ranges, furnaces, small subpanels, or EV chargers)
- Three 30A double‑pole breakers (common for dryers, water heaters, condensers, spas, or EV chargers)
- Four 20A standard breakers (small appliance and general circuits)
- Utility and outage coordination to safely shut off and reinstate power. A generator was made available for limited power during the outage.
All gear was labeled and circuits balanced to help reduce nuisance trips and to simplify future maintenance or expansion.
Code and safety considerations
The NEC 2020 requires an exterior means of disconnecting service. Our Charlotte team handled permitting, utility coordination, and the neutral/ground separation that is mandatory when a service disconnect acts as the main. The new 4‑wire feeder ensures a dedicated equipment grounding conductor is in place.
As inspectors in the area continue implementing NEC 2020, some circuits may need AFCI protection. In homes with existing conditions—such as shared neutrals—AFCI breakers can trip until the underlying wiring issue is corrected. If an inspection calls for AFCI upgrades, we can diagnose and resolve those preexisting wiring conditions as needed.
