Concord, NC 200A Electrical Panel Upgrade, GFCI & Grounding
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a full service upgrade for homeowner Carrie Field in Concord, NC. Led by technician Will Cruz, this project brought the home’s electrical system up to current code with a new indoor 200-amp main panel, expanded circuit protection, weatherproof exterior coverage, and a robust grounding system.
Date completed: October 23, 2025
What We Upgraded
- New 200A Main Panel (Aluminum, indoor): The existing panel was replaced and fully labeled. We grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and tied in the home’s existing circuits to meet current standards.
- GFCI Protection for Garage Outlets: New 20A GFCI breakers were installed to protect garage receptacles and other moisture-prone or code-required locations, improving safety against ground faults.
- Weatherproof Bubble Cover: We replaced the in-use cover on an exterior receptacle at the back of the home, keeping the outlet protected whether or not a plug is inserted.
- Dual Ground Rods: Two new ground rods were driven and bonded to the service with a grounding electrode conductor, providing a reliable, low-impedance path to earth.
Breakers and Safety Devices Installed
To provide balanced power distribution and code-compliant protection, we installed a mix of GFCI, AFCI, and standard breakers:
- GFCI breakers: Three 20A GFCI breakers to protect garages, bathrooms, exterior outlets, and other required circuits.
- AFCI breakers: Two 15A AFCI breakers for living areas and lighting where arc-fault protection is required by modern code.
- Standard breakers: Five 20A and five 15A single-pole breakers for small appliances and general lighting/receptacle circuits; plus one 20A single-pole as needed.
- Double-pole and higher-amp loads: Three 30A double-pole breakers, one 50A, and one 60A breaker to serve larger equipment such as dryer, water heater, range, A/C condenser, EV charger, or a small subpanel.
Code Compliance and Homeowner Benefits
- Built to current electrical code: Panel grounding and bonding, correct circuit terminations, and labeling improve safety and serviceability.
- Included surge protection: The panel package includes a surge protector with a $10k warranty for added peace of mind.
- 20-year transferable panel warranty: Extra confidence for current and future homeowners.
- Permitting and inspection included: We handled the permit and coordinated final inspection for a smooth, compliant upgrade.
- Limited power support during outage: During the panel swap, Touchstone made a generator available for limited essential loads.
Note on AFCI requirements: As NEC 2020 implementation increases, inspectors may require certain circuits to be upgraded to AFCI. Some homes with preexisting issues (such as shared neutrals) can experience immediate tripping when AFCI protection is added. Resolving these legacy wiring conditions can require additional diagnostic time to locate and correct the underlying cause.
