NEC-Compliant Basement Rough-In in Apex, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed the rough-in wiring for a basement remodel in Apex, NC for Riverbirch Remodeling. Led by Technician Patrick Burke, this project was finished on July 23, 2024 and prepared for inspection and trim-out. Our team followed current NEC code and the builder’s plans to add new dedicated circuits, optimized panel space, and set the stage for a safe, code-compliant living area.

Project Scope

We provided complete electrical rough-in for the new basement floor plan, including:

  • General lighting and receptacle circuits for common areas and bedrooms
  • Dedicated circuits for the laundry area: washer and electric dryer
  • Bathroom lighting and receptacles, set up for required GFCI protection at trim-out
  • Power for the sump pump and a separate pump alarm circuit
  • Power run for the A/C condenser to support the basement’s HVAC needs
  • Panel space management using the necessary breakers to create room per plan

The installation is designed to support proper AFCI/GFCI protection where required by code, with final devices to be installed during trim-out.

Circuits and Materials Installed

During rough-in, we routed, secured, and labeled home runs and branch circuits, using the following materials and amperages to match load requirements:

  • 300 ft NM-B 14/2 for 15-amp lighting and general-purpose outlet circuits
  • 80 ft NM-B 12/2 for 20-amp receptacle and appliance circuits
  • 25 ft NM-B 10/2 for 30-amp dedicated runs (e.g., electric dryer or A/C condenser)
  • 1 × 30A double-pole breaker for a heavy-load circuit
  • 2 × 20A breakers for high-current receptacle/appliance circuits
  • 2 × 15A breakers for lighting circuits
  • 2 × 15A tandem breakers and 2 × 20A tandem breakers used strategically to optimize panel space where permitted

All cable runs were stapled and protected per NEC requirements, boxes were set at correct depths for the finished wall materials, and circuits were identified at the panel to streamline inspection and future service.

How We Ensured Code Compliance

  • Matched conductor size to breaker rating (14 AWG/15A, 12 AWG/20A, 10 AWG/30A)
  • Planned AFCI protection for bedroom circuits and GFCI protection for bathroom, laundry, and sump pump receptacles during trim-out
  • Followed outlet spacing and dedicated circuit requirements for laundry and bath areas
  • Used proper box fill calculations and maintained conductor bend radii
  • Installed nail plates where needed and maintained required clearances
  • Labeled circuits clearly to aid inspection and homeowner use

What’s Next: Trim-Out and Final Testing

With the rough-in complete, our team will return for trim-out after wall finishes are in place. At that time, we will install receptacles, switches, lighting fixtures, and required GFCI/AFCI protection, make final equipment connections (washer, dryer, sump pump, A/C), and perform full circuit testing and verification. We’ll also finalize panel labeling and support the inspection process.
