Electrical Panel and Meter Upgrade in Clayton, NC
Our Raleigh branch completed a code-ready meter/main panel replacement with integrated surge protection for homeowner James Barefoot in Clayton, NC. Led by technician Francisco Martinez, this project modernized the service to a 200-amp meter/panel combo and added whole-home surge protection to help safeguard appliances and sensitive electronics.
Completed on December 15, 2025, this installation was permitted, inspected, and prepared to align with current NEC requirements adopted in the area.
What We Installed
- 200A Meter/Panel Combo (over/under with feed-through lugs) – Included scheduling the utility power drop, pulling permits, installing new grounding electrode conductors and ground rods, and setting the new combo enclosure.
- Main Panel with Aluminum Bus Bar – The panel features an aluminum bus bar and includes a 20-year transferable warranty from the manufacturer.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection – Installed a $50,000 / 10-year warranty surge protective device at the main panel to divert excess voltage to ground and help protect connected Covered Equipment during grid fluctuations, indirect lightning-induced surges, and equipment cycling.
- New Breakers – Circuiting updated with:
- 2x 40A standard breakers
- 3x 30A double-pole standard breakers
- 1x 20A double-pole standard breaker
- 6x 20A standard breakers
- 4x 15A standard breakers
- 2x 15A AFCI breakers
Note on inspections and code: As NEC 2020 enforcement expands, inspectors may require additional AFCI protection. AFCI installations can reveal preexisting wiring issues (such as shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping and require diagnostic time to resolve.
Surge Protection Coverage Details
The installed surge protector includes a manufacturer warranty of $50,000 for 10 years on Covered Equipment when protected by a properly connected Boltshield SPD. Claims are secondary to existing insurance policies and exclude direct lightning strikes.
Covered Equipment includes: washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit located inside the house, trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, electrical system components (including breakers), and hard-wired appliances/devices such as built-in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting. Security systems and medical equipment are not included.
