Project overview
Location: Charlotte, NC | Completed: July 25, 2024 | Technician: Theo Coetsee
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, supported by our Matthews branch, completed a focused safety and reliability upgrade for homeowner partners Max & Shelley Kreps. The visit included replacing two 15-amp AFCI circuit breakers, installing a new standard outlet with a matching cover, and performing a whole-home electrical diagnostic and inspection.
This service aligns with our core specialties in Panels & Service Upgrades and Circuit Breaker Repair & Replacement, helping Charlotte homeowners improve protection, functionality, and peace of mind.
Work completed at the home
- Installed 2 × 15A AFCI breakers: Arc-fault circuit interrupters add advanced protection on 15-amp, 120V circuits. These circuits commonly serve areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, foyers, and certain lighting and appliance loads, helping reduce fire risks from damaged cords, loose connections, or worn insulation.
- Installed 1 standard receptacle with cover: A new outlet was added at the customer’s request, including a matching cover for a clean, finished appearance and everyday convenience.
- Whole-home diagnostic and inspection: We conducted a comprehensive check of the home’s electrical system to help identify potential safety concerns and opportunities for improvement.
By addressing both protection at the panel and everyday power needs at the receptacle level, our team ensures the system is configured to serve the home safely and reliably.
Why AFCI breaker upgrades matter
Electrical arcing can occur when conductors are damaged or connections are loose. AFCI breakers are designed to detect these hazardous arc signatures and trip before a small problem becomes a larger safety issue. Upgrading to AFCI protection is a straightforward way to:
- Enhance protection on frequently used living-area circuits.
- Address aging wiring or wear-and-tear concerns proactively.
- Support alignment with modern residential safety practices.
Our technicians evaluate panel space, breaker compatibility, and circuit routing to ensure the right fit for the home and its electrical demands.
About the new outlet installation
Convenient access to power prevents overloading existing receptacles and reduces reliance on extension cords. The newly installed standard outlet with a matching cover provides a dedicated point of use for everyday devices and small appliances. Our team carefully selects materials to match the application and maintains proper terminations and torque on conductors for dependable performance.
Whole-home electrical inspection: what we look at
A diagnostic walk-through helps clarify the overall condition of a home’s electrical system. During this visit in Charlotte, our process included visual and functional checks such as:
- Main service equipment, panel condition, and labeling.
- Breaker sizing, terminations, and signs of overheating or wear.
- GFCI and AFCI protection where applicable.
- Grounding and bonding components.
- Receptacles, switches, and lighting controls for damage or looseness.
- Outdoor and wet-location devices and covers.
- General safety devices such as smoke and carbon monoxide alarms (presence and basic function test, where accessible).
After an inspection, we provide clear next steps so homeowners can plan maintenance or upgrades with confidence.
