200A Meter Base & Main Panel Replacement in Charlotte, NC
Our Charlotte team from the Matthews branch completed a comprehensive meter base and service upgrade for homeowner Jeanette Branch Mullen in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, this project restored safe, reliable power by replacing outdated service equipment, updating breakers, and bringing the electrical system up to current code. What We Upgraded
To meet present-day safety standards and prepare the home for inspection and utility reconnection, we installed and configured the following:
- New 200A Meter Base — Included scheduling the power drop with the utility, pulling permits, setting a new meter, and installing ground rods with grounding electrode conductors.
- Outdoor 200A Aluminum Main Panel — Brought the service equipment to current code, grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and relabeled circuits for clarity.
- PVC Conduit — 2-inch PVC conduit (8 feet) with appropriate connectors and fittings for a clean, durable installation.
- Service/Feeder Conductors — 11 feet of 4/0 THHN conductors to ensure proper ampacity and long-term performance.
- Breaker Updates — Installed a balanced mix of standard breakers to support common household loads:
- 3 × 50A standard breakers (e.g., range, heat equipment, EV charger, or subpanel)
- 4 × 20A standard breakers for general and small appliance circuits
- 6 × 15A standard breakers for lighting and standard branch circuits
For customer convenience, we can make a generator available during the temporary outage window upon request.
Code Compliance, Safety, and Inspection
Touchstone Electric handled permitting and inspection to ensure a smooth process from shut-down to final approval. As authorities continue adopting newer code cycles (such as NEC 2020), inspectors may require AFCI protection on certain circuits. In some homes this can reveal pre-existing wiring issues (for example, shared neutrals) that require diagnostic time to correct. Our team prepares homeowners for these possibilities and resolves them the right way.
As part of the panel upgrade, this installation included whole-home surge protection with a $10k warranty, plus a 20-year transferable panel warranty for added peace of mind.
