Charlotte lighting installation, switch and outlet upgrades

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch (Matthews) completed a comprehensive lighting and electrical upgrade for DeRhodes Construction (Amen Corner Construction, LLC) in Charlotte, NC. Led by technicians Theo Coetsee and Robert Sloan, this project modernized lighting throughout the space, added dedicated 20-amp circuits for new appliances, and improved safety with code-compliant protection and permitting.

Date of completion: September 25, 2025

What we installed and upgraded

  • Recessed and task lighting: Added wafer-style can lights and 3-inch Entra CL recessed downlights for clean, efficient illumination in low-clearance areas.
  • Under-cabinet lighting: Installed linear LED under-cabinet light strips with a dedicated transformer for even countertop lighting and reduced shadows.
  • Chandelier and fixtures: Hung a customer-supplied chandelier up to 50 lbs and installed additional ceiling and wall fixtures on existing boxes/circuits.
  • Step and toe-kick lighting: Integrated recessed step lights and motion-activated toe-kick lights to enhance safety and nighttime visibility.
  • Switches and controls: Relocated a bathroom light switch for better access, added a dimmer for ambiance control, and installed a 60-minute electronic timer switch for set-and-forget convenience.
  • Outlets and relocations: Relocated outlets as part of the layout update and installed new standard and GFCI receptacles where required.
  • Dedicated 20A circuits: Ran a new 20-amp circuit and receptacle for a bidet, plus a 120V 20-amp circuit for a floor heater with a thermostat.
  • Low-voltage power: Installed a low-voltage transformer to support specialty lighting components.

This blend of lighting installation and ceiling-fan/fixture work delivers a brighter, safer, and more functional interior—ideal for modern living and professional fit-outs.

Safety, wiring, and code compliance

  • GFCI and AFCI protection: Installed a 20-amp GFCI/AFCI combination breaker and GFCI receptacles to meet code and reduce shock and arc-fault risks in applicable areas.
  • Panel upgrades: Added standard 20-amp breakers for new small-appliance circuits as needed.
  • New branch wiring: Pulled NM-B 12/2 for 20-amp circuits and NM-B 14/2 for lighting/general-purpose circuits, ensuring clean, organized runs and junctions.
  • Electrical permit: Filed the electrical permit with the county for this scope. Note: Only the electrical permit was included; any Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, Builder, or other non-electrical permits are excluded. If additional non-electrical permits are required, we can provide guidance and a separate price for processing and filing.

Important AFCI note: Installing AFCI breakers can expose preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause nuisance tripping. Diagnosis can require additional time to isolate and correct those conditions.

Highlights of this Charlotte project

  • Bright, even coverage from new recessed lighting and under-cabinet LEDs.
  • Cleaner aesthetics and better ergonomics from switch and outlet relocations.
  • Dedicated 20-amp circuits for a bidet and a floor heater with precise thermostat control.
  • Enhanced safety with GFCI/AFCI protection and county-permitted work.
  • Comfort and convenience upgrades, including motion toe-kick lighting, a dimmer, and a timer switch.
