Charlotte Electrical Panel Upgrade with EV Charger and Generator Readiness
Our Charlotte branch completed a comprehensive electrical upgrade for Tina Taylor in Charlotte, NC, on September 4, 2025. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, this project replaced an older split-bus panel, added whole-home surge protection, installed a 50-amp generator inlet with an interlock, and hardwired a 60-amp outdoor EV charger.
Tina later praised our team in a post-service review for the clean workmanship and clear labeling after the upgrade.
What We Installed
- Main panel replacement (200A, indoor) — Removed the split-bus panel and installed a modern 200-amp aluminum main panel. We grounded and bonded the panel, labeled all circuits, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and tied in the existing branch circuits. A whole-home surge protection device was included to help protect sensitive electronics.
- Breaker updates for safety and capacity — Installed a balanced mix of standard breakers to support household lighting and appliances:
- 8x 15A breakers for lighting and general circuits (meeting current code in bathrooms and living areas)
- 9x 20A breakers for small-appliance and kitchen circuits
- 1x 25A 2-pole and 1x 30A 2-pole for dedicated equipment loads
- 1x 60A breaker to feed the hardwired EV charger
- Generator inlet with interlock (50A) — We reconfigured the top-left of the panel to position the generator breaker and selected circuits correctly, then installed a tested interlock kit for safe manual transfer during outages. The scope included a mounted 50A generator inlet, up to 15 feet of feeder from the panel, and a 15-foot whip for easy hook-up. The panel was stickered and labeled with clear operating instructions.
- Hardwired EV charger (up to 60A) — We ran new SEU #6 copper-aluminum rated feeder (18 feet) and hardwired the customer-supplied outdoor EVSE on a 60-amp circuit. This setup supports robust Level 2 charging capacity while meeting code for an exterior installation.
- Permitting and inspection — Our team handled the permit and coordinated inspection. During the panel swap, power was disconnected; we provided a generator for limited temporary power to minimize disruption.
Why Upgrade a Split‑Bus Panel?
Split-bus panels are common in older homes and can complicate shutdown procedures, limit expansion for new loads, and fall short of modern safety expectations. Replacing the panel brings the system up to current code, adds capacity for today’s electrical demands (like EV charging), and improves overall reliability.
- Safety and compliance — Modern panel, grounding, bonding, and labeling to current standards.
- Whole-home surge protection — Safeguards appliances and electronics from transient voltage spikes.
- Room to grow — Organized circuits and available spaces for future projects or remodels.
- Backup-ready — A code-compliant generator interlock and inlet for outages.
As inspectors implement NEC 2020, some circuits may require AFCI upgrades. Shared neutrals or preexisting wiring issues can cause nuisance tripping and may need diagnostic work. We review these possibilities with homeowners during the upgrade so there are no surprises.
EV Charging and Backup Power — Done Right
A dedicated 60-amp EV circuit provides fast, reliable Level 2 charging. The generator interlock and inlet allow safe, selective power to essential circuits during an outage. Together, these upgrades deliver convenience and resilience for modern living in Charlotte.
