Charlotte AFCI Circuit Breaker Replacement for a Double-Tap Fix
Our Charlotte branch completed a Panel & Service Upgrade for homeowner Dushyant Moon, resolving a double-tapped breaker by installing a dedicated 15A AFCI breaker. This repair restored proper circuit separation, improved safety, and brought the panel into better alignment with current code practices for arc-fault protection.

What was wrong: a double-tapped breaker
A double tap occurs when two conductors are terminated under a single breaker terminal that is designed for one conductor. This creates a loose connection risk, potential overheating, and is generally considered a code violation. It can also cause nuisance tripping and unpredictable performance across the affected circuits.
Our solution: new 15A AFCI breaker and proper circuit separation
To correct the issue, we installed a new 15A AFCI breaker and separated the conductors so each circuit has its own properly rated overcurrent protection. This restores intended load distribution and adds modern arc-fault protection where required.
AFCI protection helps detect dangerous arcing conditions and is commonly required on many 120V, 15A general-purpose circuits serving areas such as bedrooms, living spaces, hallways, foyers, and other finished rooms. With the new breaker in place, the previously double-tapped conductors are now properly terminated, helping reduce nuisance trips tied to the improper connection.
Safety and code-aligned benefits
- Eliminated double tap: Each conductor now terminates to its own breaker, addressing a common panel defect.
- Arc-fault protection: AFCI technology helps mitigate fire risks caused by arcing faults from damaged wires, loose connections, or cord issues.
- Improved reliability: Properly separated circuits support more predictable performance and can reduce trips caused by shared or loose terminations.
- Code alignment: The repair aligns with current electrical safety standards for many living areas in a home.
Important note about AFCI installations
When installing AFCI breakers, immediate tripping can occur if there is a preexisting condition in the home’s wiring—one common example is a shared neutral across circuits. If a shared neutral or similar wiring issue is present, diagnosing it can require methodically checking devices and fixtures on the affected circuits until the condition is located and corrected. This process can be detailed and time-consuming but is essential for long-term safety and reliability.
