3-Phase Panel Upgrade and 400A Disconnect in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric completed a code-compliant service upgrade in Charlotte, NC on August 29, 2024. Our Charlotte branch (based near Matthews) delivered a turnkey installation that increased service capacity and improved distribution for a local property owned by Alec Polites (John Polites Realty Company). Lead technicians Christian Cedillos and Theo Coetsee managed the project from permitting through final walkthrough.
Project overview
This project expanded available service and modernized distribution to support current and future electrical demand. The installation followed local codes and manufacturer specifications, with organized labeling and a clean, professional finish.
- CT can installation: Furnished and installed a new CT metering cabinet at the back of the building per local utility and code requirements.
- 400A service disconnect: Furnished and installed a 400 amp NEMA-rated service disconnect at the exterior for safe, accessible shutoff and protection.
- 3-phase interior panels: Furnished and installed new interior 3-phase panels:
- 225A, 120/208V panelboard for primary distribution
- 100A, 120/208V panelboard for dedicated loads
- Grounding and protection: Integrated new grounding equipment and breakers to match circuits and capacity, improving safety and reliability.
Why this upgrade made sense
- More capacity: The 400A service disconnect and 3-phase panels provide headroom for today’s loads and future expansion.
- Better distribution: Balanced 3-phase power supports equipment efficiency and reduces nuisance tripping.
- Safety and uptime: Modern overcurrent protection, dedicated grounding, and clear labeling simplify maintenance and minimize downtime.
- Local code compliance: All equipment and installation practices align with current codes and manufacturer guidelines.
Permitting and inspection
As part of this scope, Touchstone Electric filed the required county electrical permit and coordinated our work to pass inspection. Jurisdictional requirements can vary. The permit included for this project is for the electrical scope only.
- Exclusions: Non-electrical permits (such as Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, separate Subcontractor, or Builder permits) are not included. If additional permits are required by your jurisdiction, we will advise you on next steps and can provide pricing to handle those filings if needed.
- Inspector findings outside scope: If an inspector identifies issues unrelated to the defined scope, we will provide a separate written quote to address those items.
