200A Meter Base and Main Panel Upgrade in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch (based in Matthews) completed a full 200-amp service refresh for homeowner Chris Fagan in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project brought the home’s electrical service and exterior main panel up to current code and improved overall safety and reliability. Completion date: June 4, 2025.

Project categories: Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement.

Scope of Work

  • Furnished and installed a new 200A meter base, including coordination with the power provider for a safe power drop.
  • Upgraded the exterior 200A main breaker panel and brought the installation into alignment with current electrical code.
  • Grounding and bonding improvements with properly installed grounding electrodes and conductors for system safety.
  • Reconnected existing circuits, labeled the new panel, and verified connections for a clean, organized finish.
  • Added GFCI protection for the crawl space sump pump and dehumidifier to enhance moisture-area safety.
  • Handled permitting and coordinated the required inspection.

Power was planned to be out for approximately one day to safely complete the service change. Upon request, our team can make a generator available for limited, temporary power during an outage window.

Code Compliance and Safety

Every service upgrade we complete in Charlotte, NC is permitted and inspected. For this project, our team pulled the electrical permit and managed the inspection process. Please note that jurisdictions may require additional non-electrical permits for certain projects; those are not included in our electrical permit service. If additional permits are needed, we’ll let you know what to secure or can provide pricing to process them for you.

As more local inspectors implement NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may need upgrades like AFCI protection on specific circuits. In older systems, AFCI installation can reveal preexisting conditions (for example, shared neutrals), which may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. We review these scenarios with homeowners if they arise.

Why This Upgrade Matters

  • Capacity and reliability: A modern 200-amp service supports today’s appliances, HVAC, and future additions like EV charging or a workshop.
  • Safety enhancements: Updated grounding/bonding, a properly rated meter base, and GFCI protection reduce shock and fire risk.
  • Code-aligned installation: A clean, labeled panel and inspected service help protect your home and streamline future maintenance or remodels.

What Homeowners Can Expect

  • Pre-job coordination: We schedule with the utility for a safe disconnect/reconnect and line up permits and inspections.
  • Outage planning: Expect a single-day outage for most 200A service changes. Limited temporary power can be arranged by request.
  • Clean finish: Circuits are reconnected, the panel is clearly labeled, and the workspace is left tidy.
