Charlotte 200A Service Disconnect and Panel Feeder Upgrade
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive service upgrade for homeowner Alex Rownd in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project brought the home’s electrical service up to modern code and safety standards while adding a reliable dedicated circuit for essential equipment in the crawlspace.

What We Upgraded
- Installed a new 200A service disconnect adjacent to the meter to meet code for equipment not back-to-back with the meter base.
- Ran a new 4/0 SER feeder from the 200A disconnect to the subpanel located in the laundry room, with neutrals and grounds properly separated per code.
- Added a 20A GFCI-protected dedicated circuit from the interior panel to the crawlspace to serve the sump pump and dehumidifier.
- Provided exterior raceway components including a PVC junction box and PVC conduit on the back exterior to complete the feeder route safely and neatly.
- Coordinated shutoff and permitting as required to perform the service disconnect installation and restore power promptly upon completion.
During installation, limited sheetrock cuts were required below the laundry room panel to route the new feeder and dedicated circuit. Touchstone Electric is not responsible for sheetrock repair or painting.
Why This Upgrade Was Needed
Before our visit, the wire from the meter can to the laundry room panel was only rated for 125 amps, which is undersized for a home intended to operate on a 200A service. To ensure proper capacity and safety, a 200A disconnect and the correct 4/0 SER feeder were installed. This upgrade:
- Brings the service equipment and feeder sizing into alignment with a 200A load.
- Improves safety by ensuring proper neutral/ground separation in the subpanel.
- Provides added capacity for present and future electrical needs.
We also installed a dedicated 20A GFCI circuit for the sump pump and dehumidifier. In damp or semi-wet locations like crawlspaces, GFCI protection and a dedicated path help reduce nuisance trips and support consistent operation of critical moisture and water-control equipment.
Panels and Service Disconnect Expertise
This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Service Disconnects specialties. Our process includes proper sizing, safe routing, code-compliant terminations, and a clean, labeled finish. When a main disconnect is added, we treat the interior panel as a subpanel, separating neutrals and grounds and running the correct feeder with an equipment grounding conductor.
Quality Checks and Safety Review
As part of our visit, we performed an Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold checklist, including:
- Testing smoke/CO detectors and reviewing panel safety.
- Verifying code updates and identifying any loose or deteriorated connections.
- Sealing and tightening terminations where needed for long-term reliability.
