Charlotte 200A Meter/Panel Combo Replacement and Surge Protection

On May 19, 2026, our Charlotte team based in Matthews completed a permitted utility upgrade for Wingrave in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Tyquan Johnson, this project replaced an aging 4‑space meter/panel combo with a modern 200A meter-base and panel assembly, creating safe capacity for present loads and future circuits. We also installed whole‑house surge protection at the main service to help safeguard appliances and electronics from damaging voltage spikes.

Project highlights

  • Category: Panels & Service Upgrades; Meter Base & Service Replacement
  • Scope: Remove 4‑space meter/panel combo and install an over/under 200A meter/panel combo with feed‑through lugs for future expansion
  • Safety and compliance: Ground rods and grounding electrode conductors installed per code
  • Protection: Whole‑home surge protective device installed at the main service
  • Permitting: County electrical permit obtained; inspection coordinated
  • Utility coordination: Power drop scheduled to complete the service upgrade efficiently

The new 200A combo provides increased breaker space and a cleaner, code‑compliant service layout. Feed‑through lugs allow for streamlined connections to downstream panels if needed, keeping expansion options open while maintaining safe ampacity.

Whole‑house surge protection for Charlotte homes

We installed a service‑rated surge protective device (SPD) at the main panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground. This helps protect sensitive electronics and major appliances from surges caused by lightning activity in the area, utility grid fluctuations, and large equipment cycling on and off.

The SPD includes a 3‑year, $10,000 connected‑equipment warranty from the manufacturer. Claims are secondary to your existing insurance, direct lightning strikes are excluded, and security systems and medical equipment are not covered. Covered items generally include common household appliances, hardwired devices, and electrical system components when properly connected to the SPD.

What was included in this upgrade

  • Filing the county electrical permit for this project
  • Scheduling the utility power drop and coordinating the outage window
  • Installing the new 200A meter/panel combo with appropriate grounding
  • Mounting and wiring the whole‑home surge protector at the main service

Per the project scope, the following items were not included: riser/weatherhead, new service‑entrance conductors from the meter to the weatherhead, additional breakers, or feeders/conduit to downstream main panels (if required). Upon request, we can make a temporary generator available for limited power during the planned outage.

Permits, inspections, and code considerations

Every jurisdiction may have unique requirements. This job included the electrical permit only. If a Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, or other non‑electrical permit is required for a future project, those would be handled separately.

As inspectors in our area continue adopting NEC 2020, some homes may be required to upgrade certain circuits to AFCI protection. In older systems, existing conditions like shared neutrals can cause immediate tripping and may require diagnostic time to resolve. We walk homeowners through these findings if they arise so there are no surprises.

Why Charlotte homeowners choose a 200A service upgrade

Upgrading to a modern 200A meter/panel combo provides the breaker space and service capacity today’s homes demand—especially when planning EV charging, HVAC upgrades, kitchen remodels, or outbuilding circuits. Pairing the upgrade with whole‑home surge protection adds another layer of defense to extend the life of appliances and electronics.
