About this 200A electrical panel upgrade in Charlotte
Our Charlotte branch completed a code-compliant 200 amp main electrical panel upgrade for homeowner Kurt Haberli in Charlotte, NC. The project was performed by Christian Cedillos and wrapped up on May 4, 2024. This Panels & Service Upgrades project addressed capacity, safety, and reliability concerns while bringing the home’s electrical system up to current code.
Before the upgrade, the home had components affected by previous work. We diagnosed the issues, replaced the panel, and ensured proper grounding, bonding, labeling, and circuit protection for a safer, more dependable system.
Project highlights
- New 200A main panel (indoor, ALUM) – Replaced the existing panel, installed a new main lug, and clearly labeled all circuits for easy identification.
- Grounding and bonding – Brought the system to current electrical code with correct grounding and bonding practices.
- Service entrance reconnection – Reconnected the service entrance cable using 4/0 SER (4‑wire) to support the new 200A service.
- Whole-home surge protection – Installed a surge protector that includes a $25k connected-equipment warranty for added peace of mind.
- Breaker updates – Installed new, appropriately rated breakers: fifteen 15A, four 20A, two 30A double‑pole, one 40A, and one specialty breaker to match the home’s equipment and loads.
- Permitting and inspection – Pulled the electrical permit and coordinated the required county inspection.
- Crawlspace correction – Completed a crawlspace change order at no additional cost to the homeowner.
- Minimized downtime – Power was disconnected during the panel swap; a generator was made available for limited essential power during the outage.
Why this upgrade matters for Charlotte homes
A 200 amp service helps modern homes safely support today’s electrical demands, from HVAC systems and laundry appliances to EV chargers and dedicated kitchen circuits. By replacing an aging panel and ensuring proper circuit protection, you reduce nuisance trips, minimize risks from loose or deteriorated connections, and prepare the home for future additions.
This project also improved resilience with whole-home surge protection, which helps guard sensitive electronics and major appliances from voltage spikes caused by storms and utility events common to the Charlotte area.

Ongoing safety membership
As part of our Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold, we performed a comprehensive safety check, including smoke/CO detector testing, panel safety review, and evaluation of loose or deteriorated connections.
