Charlotte 200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and Breaker Replacement

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, based out of our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive 200-amp electrical panel upgrade and breaker replacement for homeowner Domenic Cesare in Charlotte, NC on January 5, 2026. This project modernized the home’s service equipment, improved safety and reliability, and added capacity for today’s appliances and technology.

Project Highlights

  • 200A main panel (indoor) replacement and brought up to current electrical code
  • Breaker replacements and circuit relabeling for clear identification
  • Grounding system upgrade with a new driven ground rod and continuous GEC to the service panel
  • Whole-home surge protection installed at the main service equipment
  • County electrical permit secured with inspection coordination
  • Lighting upgrades: two customer-supplied pendant fixtures installed on existing boxes/circuits
  • Customer-requested custom tasks completed to finish details
  • Work led by Technician: Tyquan Johnson

What We Upgraded

We removed the aging service panel and installed a new indoor 200-amp main panel. The panel was properly grounded and bonded, service entrance conductors were reconnected, and all existing circuits were organized and labeled for future clarity. As part of the code-focused scope, we evaluated arc-fault and ground-fault requirements under current standards and installed the appropriate protection at the panel where applicable.

To further protect sensitive electronics, we added a surge protective device at the main service equipment, designed to reduce damage from voltage spikes caused by storms and utility events—an important safeguard for Charlotte-area homes.

Breaker Replacement Details

  • 1 × 40A breaker for large appliances (dryer, water heater, AC, spa, or EV charger as applicable)
  • 2 × 30A double‑pole breakers for mid-size 240V loads
  • 6 × 20A breakers supporting kitchen and small appliance circuits
  • 8 × 15A breakers serving lighting and standard branch circuits

Each circuit was carefully landed to the new panel with secure terminations and labeling, improving safety, organization, and serviceability for future needs.

Grounding and Code Compliance

The home’s grounding was modernized with a new ground rod and a continuous grounding electrode conductor routed back to the main service panel. Proper grounding and bonding are essential for safely clearing faults and protecting people and equipment, especially as newer codes are adopted in Mecklenburg County and across Charlotte.

Permitting and Inspection

Our team secured the electrical permit with the county and handled inspection coordination as part of the service upgrade. We keep homeowners informed throughout the process so that panel change-outs, breaker adjustments, and any required code updates are completed efficiently and correctly.

Lighting Enhancements

As a finishing touch, we installed two customer-supplied pendant fixtures on existing boxes and circuits, bringing fresh, functional lighting to the space without the need for new wiring.

Customer Feedback

After completion, Domenic Cesare praised our team with a positive review for our professionalism and thorough service. We appreciate the trust and the opportunity to serve another Charlotte homeowner with a safe, code-compliant upgrade.
