Charlotte 100A Subpanel Installation, Trenching, and Panel Safety Rejuvenation

Our Charlotte branch, based in Matthews, completed a clean, code‑minded 100A subpanel installation for homeowner Nathan Gowan in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Brian Cain, this project expanded the home’s electrical capacity while enhancing safety and reliability through a comprehensive panel rejuvenation and system tests. Completed on May 21, 2024, the work supports future upgrades and helps ensure stable power distribution for years to come.

Service categories: Panels & Service Upgrades; Subpanel Installation

Project Highlights

  • 100A subpanel feeder installed and protected in 1" PVC conduit for a durable, code‑compliant run.
  • Trenching at 18–24 inches to route the underground conduit safely. Utility locating was observed prior to digging for a safe installation.
  • New 100A 2‑pole breaker to supply the subpanel from the main service.
  • Added 30A double‑pole breaker to support future medium‑duty equipment or appliances as needed.
  • Panel Rejuvenation and safety verification including cleaning, connection re‑torque, moisture inspection and resealing of openings, verification that neutrals and grounds are properly separated, voltage checks, antioxidant application as appropriate, and function testing of AFCI/GFCI protection with homeowner consent.

This combination of upgrades improves available capacity, reduces nuisance trips, and provides flexibility for additions like a workshop circuit, pool equipment, or an EV charger—without overloading the main panel.

Materials and Methods Used

  • 100A (2‑pole) breaker dedicated to the new subpanel feeder.
  • 30A (2‑pole) breaker installed for a future dedicated load circuit.
  • SER #2 4‑wire feeder (approx. 75 ft) to deliver a full 100A capacity with proper neutral and ground conductors.
  • THHN #2 conductors (approx. 20 ft) where individual conductors were required within conduit.
  • 1" PVC conduit (approx. 30 ft) for mechanical protection and a clean, maintainable route.
  • Trenching (approx. 10 ft) at 18–24" depth, following safe digging practices to protect underground utilities and ensure proper burial.

Our team sized conductors and overcurrent protection for a true 100A feeder, used corrosion‑resistant materials, and ensured bonding and grounding were correct for subpanel operation. The result is a robust, expandable setup that meets modern electrical standards.

Panel Rejuvenation: Safety First

As part of our Panels & Service Upgrades service, we performed a thorough panel rejuvenation. We vacuumed and cleaned the interior, re‑tensioned terminals at the main breaker, bus bars, and ground lugs, confirmed one conductor per lug, and verified the separation of neutrals and grounds. We checked for water intrusion and sealed any openings that could allow moisture or pests. Voltage was verified at the service, antioxidant was applied where needed, and AFCI/GFCI devices were tested with the homeowner’s consent. This preventative maintenance helps reduce heat buildup, arcing risk, and nuisance tripping.
