200A Main Panel Replacement and Surge Protection in Cary, NC
Our Raleigh team completed a comprehensive main electrical panel upgrade for Murray Levine in Cary, NC. Led by technician Matthew Castello, this Panels & Service Upgrades project brought the home’s electrical system up to current code, enhanced whole-home surge protection, and improved safety and reliability for the long term. Work was completed on July 24, 2025, with all required permitting and inspection included.
Scope of Work
- Permitting and Inspection: Pulled the required permit and coordinated inspection to verify code compliance.
- 200A Main Electrical Panel (Indoor) with Copper Bus: Replaced the main panel, reconnected service entrance conductors and existing circuits, labeled circuits, and properly grounded and bonded the panel. The copper bus panel includes a 50-year transferable warranty and delivers excellent durability.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a manufacturer-backed surge protective device at the main panel to divert harmful voltage spikes to ground and help protect appliances, electronics, and sensitive equipment. Includes a 10-year equipment warranty.
- Breaker Upgrades for Safety and Performance: Installed a balanced mix of AFCI and standard breakers across critical home circuits, including multiple 15–50 amp single- and double-pole breakers to support appliances, HVAC, kitchen and living areas, laundry, and small appliance circuits.
- Grounding System Upgrade: Drove new ground rods and connected a grounding electrode conductor to the main service panel with secure clamps for improved system grounding.
To minimize disruption during the panel changeover, power was shut off briefly; a generator was made available for limited power usage during the outage.
Code and Safety Considerations
As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 updates, some homes require upgrades to AFCI protection on certain circuits. While AFCIs greatly improve safety, they can expose preexisting wiring issues (such as shared neutrals) that may cause nuisance tripping until corrected. If a shared neutral or similar condition is discovered, additional diagnostic work may be needed to isolate and resolve the issue.
Our team brings panels up to code, clearly labels circuits, and confirms proper grounding and bonding—key steps that help reduce hazards, simplify future service, and improve system performance.
Why a Copper-Bus 200A Panel and Whole-Home Surge Protection?
- Long-term reliability: Copper-bus construction provides robust conductivity and exceptional durability for high-demand households.
- Cleaner, safer power distribution: A properly sized and labeled 200-amp main panel helps reduce overloads and makes expansion easier.
- Protection from electrical surges: A whole-home surge protective device helps shield wiring, appliances, and electronics from grid fluctuations, lightning-induced surges, or large equipment cycling.
