Project overview: AFCI breaker replacement and panel rejuvenation in Lowell, NC
Our Charlotte branch, based in Matthews, recently helped homeowner Bobby Evans in Lowell, NC with a targeted Panels & Service Upgrades and Circuit Breaker Repair & Replacement service. Led by technician Clay Barnette on March 27, 2025, we replaced two GFCI breakers with AFCI models, installed two 15A tandem breakers to correctly land multiple circuits, and completed a full panel rejuvenation that included separating grounds and retensioning all connections.
Work performed
- Replaced 2 breakers with 15A AFCI: Upgraded branch circuits serving typical 120V receptacles and lighting in living areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, dining areas, and similar spaces. AFCI protection helps reduce fire risk by detecting hazardous arcing conditions.
- Installed 2 tandem 15A breakers: Where multiple circuits had been tied together with wirenuts, we corrected the landing by using code-compliant tandems as supported by the panel, ensuring each circuit has proper overcurrent protection and improved organization.
- Panel rejuvenation:
- Vacuumed and cleaned the panel interior for a clear workspace and better long‑term reliability.
- Re-tensioned loose connections at the ground lug, bus bars, and main breaker.
- Verified that ground and neutral bars are separated and that lugs have one conductor per terminal.
- Inspected for water intrusion and re-sealed open knockouts to help prevent arcing and keep pests out.
- Confirmed correct service voltage from the provider and applied antioxidant where appropriate.
- With the customer’s consent, tested AFCI and GFCI devices to confirm proper operation.
This combination of upgrades improves protection, tidiness, and serviceability inside the electrical panel—key steps for safer, more reliable power throughout the home.
Why AFCI instead of GFCI in living areas?
GFCI protection is designed to protect people from ground faults, primarily required in locations such as bathrooms, garages, and exterior outlets. AFCI protection is designed to detect dangerous arcing that can lead to electrical fires, commonly required in living spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, and similar areas. By replacing the two GFCI breakers with AFCI breakers on the appropriate circuits, we aligned the protection type with the application while maintaining safety where GFCI remains necessary.
Important note about AFCI tripping and diagnostics
When installing AFCI breakers, immediate tripping can occur if there is a preexisting issue on a circuit—such as a shared neutral. In these cases, diagnostics may involve opening devices and fixtures on the affected circuits to isolate the condition, which can require additional time. Our team is experienced in identifying and resolving these situations to restore proper operation safely.
