80-Amp Level 2 EV Charger Installation in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a customer-provided, hardwired 80-amp Level 2 EV charger installation for Duke Energy - Allumia in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, our crew delivered a clean, code-compliant outdoor setup that provides fast, reliable charging and room for future expansion.

Date completed: December 12, 2024 | Branch: Charlotte (serving the greater Charlotte–Matthews area)

Scope of Work

To support the high continuous load of an 80A EV charger, we installed a dedicated outdoor subpanel and a properly sized, hardwired circuit on the exterior of the property. The final charger placement was kept within approximately 10 feet of the subpanel for optimal performance and maintenance access.

  • Filed an electrical permit with the county for a compliant installation.
  • Installed an outdoor-rated, small 4/8-circuit subpanel to serve the EV charger and allow for future additions.
  • Provided appropriately sized overcurrent protection and feeder components for the new subpanel and charger circuit.
  • Routed wiring in a neat, professional manner using PVC conduit and short liquidtight sections for weather-exposed connections.
  • Pulled XHHW/THHN conductors rated for wet locations to ensure durability and safety.
  • Mounted and hardwired the customer’s Level 2 charger to manufacturer specifications and current electrical code.

Materials and Methods Used

Outdoor installations in Charlotte demand robust, weather-ready components. Our team selected and installed:

  • Outdoor subpanel with capacity for the EV circuit and potential future needs.
  • Properly sized breakers for both the feeder and the EV charger circuit.
  • PVC conduit and liquidtight flexible conduit with listed fittings and connectors for a sealed, watertight system.
  • XHHW and THHN conductors suitable for wet locations and conduit applications.
  • Clean penetrations, secure strapping, and labeled terminations for long-term serviceability.

Permitting, Code, and Inspection Readiness

This project was completed under a county electrical permit and built to current code standards observed in Charlotte, including NEC requirements applicable at the time of installation. Inspectors in our area may require updates such as AFCI protection on certain circuits when applicable; if additional non-electrical permits are ever required by a jurisdiction (e.g., zoning, environmental, or historic), those are outside the standard electrical permit and handled separately.

Our goal is to deliver a safe, compliant installation that’s ready for inspection and reliable daily use.

Results for the Customer

  • Fast Level 2 charging from a dedicated 80A hardwired circuit.
  • Outdoor subpanel provides flexibility for future electrical needs.
  • Neat, weather-resistant conduit runs and labeled terminations.
  • Professional installation by a local Charlotte crew with county permitting.

This installation also aligned with a Duke Energy EV incentive for the project. Our team documented the work to support rebate processing as applicable.
