Level 2 EV Charger Installation in Kannapolis, NC

Location: Kannapolis, NC • Completed: April 20, 2026 • Technician: Mark Alaev • Branch: Charlotte (Matthews)

Touchstone Electric installed a dedicated 60-amp Level 2 EV charging circuit for Duke Energy - Allumia, delivering a safe, code-compliant solution tailored to the home’s layout. The exterior main panel was located on the opposite side of the house from the garage, so our team designed a clean conduit-and-cable route to reach the preferred charger location without compromising performance or aesthetics.

Project Overview

To power a modern Level 2 EV charger, we installed a 60A dedicated circuit capable of supporting up to a 48A continuous charging load (per the 80% continuous-load rule). The run began at the exterior panel, continued in PVC conduit into the porch ceiling, then transitioned to #6 SEU cable for the remainder of the route into the garage. All work was permitted and completed to current electrical code standards.

  • 60-amp breaker installed in the main panel for a dedicated EV circuit
  • 1" PVC conduit routed from the exterior panel into the porch ceiling for mechanical protection
  • #6 THHN copper conductors pulled through conduit to a junction point
  • Transition to #6 SEU cable for an efficient, code-compliant run into the garage
  • Mounted junction boxes with Polaris lugs for secure terminations
  • Space management in the panel with a 15A tandem breaker where appropriate
  • Permit secured and installation performed to local code

This layout minimizes surface wiring where possible while maintaining accessibility for future service and inspection.

Materials and Methods

Our Charlotte branch team selected durable, code-approved materials to ensure long-term reliability:

  • Approximately 35 ft of 1" PVC conduit with fittings, straps, and LBs
  • Approximately 30 ft of #6 THHN conductors sized for a 60A circuit
  • Approximately 40 ft of #6 SEU cable to complete the run into the garage
  • 60A breaker for the EV circuit and a 15A tandem breaker for panel space optimization
  • Junction boxes and Polaris lugs for robust, serviceable connections

We carefully accessed the porch ceiling to fish conductors across to the garage, maintaining a neat appearance and proper support for the wiring method at each transition. The final setup prepares the space for either hardwired EVSE or a suitable receptacle configuration, as specified.

Permitting and Rebate Assistance

Touchstone Electric secured the permit for this project and coordinated installation details to align with the site conditions. As part of the process for Duke Energy program participation, our team provided documentation support to help streamline any available rebate steps for the customer.

Results You Can Charge On

The homeowner now has a dedicated, high-capacity Level 2 charging circuit in the garage—ready to support faster overnight charging and future EV needs. By running conduit from the exterior panel and transitioning to SEU, we preserved both safety and efficiency while meeting the home’s unique layout challenges.

  • Reliable 60A circuit for modern Level 2 EV chargers
  • Clean transitions and accessible junctions for future service
  • Installed by a licensed electrician from our Charlotte (Matthews) branch
