Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, based out of Matthews, completed a permitted Level 2 EV charger circuit for homeowner Rafael Bravo in Columbus, NC on December 5, 2024. Lead technician Gump Martin installed a new 50-amp, 240V dedicated circuit using 6 AWG conductors, PVC and liquidtight conduit, and a standard 50A breaker for a clean, code-compliant result that’s ready for fast, reliable home charging.

What we installed
- 50-amp breaker (standard): New two-pole 50A breaker installed in the service panel to serve the EV charging load.
- 6/3 NM-B Romex (approximately 75 ft): Interior cable runs for the dedicated 240V circuit, routed neatly with proper supports and terminations. Junction boxes were included where needed.
- 1" PVC conduit (approximately 30 ft): Rigid PVC for protected pathways and transitions, including connectors and LBs as applicable.
- #6 AWG THHN copper conductors (approximately 30 ft): Pulled within conduit to maintain ampacity and durability in exposed sections per code.
- 3/4" liquidtight flexible conduit (approximately 8 ft): Seal-tight connection at the equipment location to handle vibration, moisture, and final device whip routing.
- 14/2 NM-B (approximately 20 ft): Short branch-circuit adjustments performed as needed to maintain tidy, code-aligned terminations near the new run.
- Electrical permit filed: We secured the required electrical permit to ensure compliance and proper inspection.
- Additional wireman support: An assisting electrician helped keep the project efficient and minimally disruptive.
Clean, code-compliant installation
Level 2 charging demands a dedicated, properly sized circuit. Our team selected 6 AWG copper conductors for a 50A circuit, protected by a 50-amp breaker and installed with attention to bend radius, secure supports, labeling, and torque specs at all terminations. Where the run required protection or exposure, we used 1" PVC conduit with appropriate fittings and LB bodies, transitioning to liquidtight flexible conduit at the final connection for a professional, durable finish.
We handled the electrical permit with the local authority so the installation can be inspected as required. Note: the permit covers electrical work only; if any jurisdiction requires additional non-electrical permits, those are separate from our electrical permit scope.
