Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a comprehensive 400-amp service upgrade and panel relocation for Walsh Crawl Space & Structural Repair in Charlotte, NC. Led by technicians Ben Lively and Will Cruz, this project modernized the home’s power infrastructure, expanded capacity for new spaces and equipment, and brought key systems up to current code. Completed on May 30, 2025, the work supports current needs and future growth, including EV charging and specialty appliances.

Panels & Service Upgrades: What we completed

  • Installed a new 400A meter-base combo with dual disconnects to safely and efficiently split service to the main residence and new garage area.
  • Relocated two 200A main panels to the new garage location, optimizing access and layout.
  • Relocated the generator panel and verified load and transfer readiness for reliable backup power.
  • Installed a new grounding electrode system and bonding for safety and code compliance.
  • Pulled new feeders to the electrical panels to support the increased capacity.
  • Performed a partial rewire to bring existing circuits back up to current code.

Garage power and new addition wiring

  • Installed a 200A meter base/panel combo and a new 200A indoor panel in the garage.

  • Added circuits and outlets for three garage door openers and customer-requested garage receptacles.
  • Installed two recessed soffit lights on the rear of the garage for exterior illumination.
  • Ran direct-burial Cat6 networking from house to garage and a 12/3 UF trench run for a 3-way switch control between buildings.

Lighting, devices, and specialty equipment

  • Supplied and installed 43 wafer-style recessed lights for efficient, low-profile lighting.
  • Installed customer-supplied lights and ceiling fans across multiple rooms and areas.
  • Installed eight customer-supplied exterior fixtures to enhance curb appeal and security.
  • Wired and installed a steam shower (up to 100A) with dedicated feeder and disconnect for safe maintenance.

Protection, EV-readiness, and essential circuits

  • Whole-home surge protection added at the service to help safeguard electronics and major appliances.
  • EV-ready with a 50A circuit for a future charger, plus a 30A outlet for flexible power needs.
  • Dedicated circuits installed for washer and dryer, hot water heater, and a sewage lift pump.
  • New GFCI protection provided where required by code (kitchens, baths, exterior, and garage areas as applicable).

Code compliance, permitting, and utility coordination

All work was completed under an electrical permit with inspections. Our team met onsite with a Duke Energy engineer to confirm the available power from the transformer for the 400A service. Bringing portions of the existing wiring up to current standards ensures safety, reliability, and a clean path for future improvements.
