400A Meter/Panel Upgrade with 200A Subpanel in Mint Hill
Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive service upgrade for homeowner David Banks in Mint Hill, NC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos from our Charlotte team, this project modernized the home’s electrical infrastructure to support higher demand and future expansion. Completed on April 2, 2025, the scope included a 400-amp meter/panel combo, a dedicated 4/0 THHN feeder, a 200-amp indoor subpanel, and targeted breaker upgrades—delivered with permitting and utility coordination.
Project Highlights
- 400A meter/panel combo: New service equipment installed, including scheduling the utility power drop, pulling permits, and setting ground rods with proper grounding electrode conductors.
- 4/0 THHN feeder (35 ft): Heavy-duty conductor sized for 250-amp+ feeder applications to supply main equipment and subfeed needs.
- 200A indoor subpanel: New subpanel installed to distribute circuits efficiently and leave room for future additions.
- Breaker upgrades: Five 20-amp standard breakers for small-appliance circuits and three 15-amp standard breakers serving bathroom lighting and standard branch circuits per current code practices.
These upgrades improve available capacity, streamline circuit distribution, and create space for new loads such as kitchen upgrades, workshop tools, or EV charging—helping the home stay safe and flexible as needs grow.
Permitting, Utility Coordination, and Code Considerations
For this Mint Hill service upgrade, our team handled the full permitting process and coordinated the utility power drop to minimize downtime and keep the project on schedule. During the scheduled outage, Touchstone can make a generator available for limited power usage upon request.
As inspectors continue to implement NEC 2020 requirements, an inspection may call for AFCI upgrades on certain circuits. Installing AFCI breakers can expose preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping. In those cases, additional diagnostic work—potentially including opening fixtures and devices on the affected circuits—may be required to locate and correct the issue.
What This Upgrade Means for Your Home
- Greater capacity: The 400A service and 200A subpanel provide ample headroom for present and future electrical needs.
- Cleaner distribution: A well-laid-out subpanel helps separate high-demand areas and simplifies future circuit additions.
- Readiness for modern loads: Supports renovations, technology upgrades, and additional appliances with confidence.
- Safety-first approach: Proper grounding, code-aligned breaker selections, and coordination with the utility and inspectors.
