Project overview
Our Matthews branch in the Charlotte market completed a comprehensive 400-amp meter base and service upgrade for a home in Weddington, NC. Led by technician Ben Lively, this project brought the property’s electrical service up to modern capacity with a new meter/panel combo, coordinated utility shutdown, permitting, surge protection, and a detailed panel rejuvenation. Completed on July 12, 2024, the upgrade delivers safe, reliable power for today’s high-demand households.
Scope of work
- 400A meter/panel combo installation: We supplied and installed a new 400-amp meter/panel combination, providing increased service capacity and streamlined distribution.
- Utility and permitting: Our team scheduled the power drop with the power provider and pulled the necessary permits to ensure a compliant, low-stress process.
- Service conductors and grounding: We installed conduit from the new meter to the weatherhead, ran service entrance cable to the drip loop, and set new ground rods with grounding electrode conductors for a robust grounding system.
- Circuit migration: We carefully moved circuits from the old panel to the new meter/panel combo, labeling and organizing for clarity and future maintenance.
- Whole-home surge protection: A premium surge protector with a $10k warranty was included to help guard the home’s sensitive electronics and appliances.
- Limited power option during outage: At the customer’s request, we can make a generator available to keep essentials running while the service is offline.
Panel rejuvenation for safety and reliability
As part of this Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement project, we performed a thorough panel rejuvenation to refresh and validate the system’s integrity:
- Vacuumed and cleaned the panel interior to remove dust and debris.
- Re-tensioned all accessible lugs and terminations, including ground lugs, bus bars, and main connections.
- Verified proper separation of neutrals and grounds with one conductor per lug.
- Inspected for water intrusion and re-sealed any openings to prevent arcing and pest entry.
- Confirmed correct voltage from the electrical provider and applied antioxidant on conductors as needed.
- Tested AFCI and GFCI breakers with the customer’s consent.
Quality materials and expert craftsmanship
To support dedicated loads and future-ready circuits, our Charlotte team installed appropriately sized conductors, including THHN #6 for 60-amp circuits and THHN #10 for 30-amp circuits. An additional wireman assisted to keep the project on schedule and ensure precise installations. All labeling was updated for clear identification, making the system easier to operate and service.
Why a 400A upgrade makes sense for Weddington homes
Modern homes often need more capacity for EV chargers, pools, workshops, home offices, and additions. A 400-amp service offers headroom for current usage and growth, while improved grounding and surge protection help safeguard sensitive electronics and major appliances.
