Project overview: 400A service upgrade and outdoor electrical in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, based out of our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive 400 amp service upgrade and outdoor living power package for Boon & Company Construction in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project wrapped on April 22, 2024 and delivered safe, code-conscious capacity for new lighting, heating, and entertainment features.
This job combined a main service upgrade with new interior lighting, exterior floodlights, GFCI-protected dedicated circuits, porch and patio heaters, and a hot tub disconnect—ensuring reliable power for present needs and room to grow.
Scope of work completed
- 400A service upgrade: Furnished and installed a new 400 amp main service with permits, grounding electrodes, surge protection, and a main breaker disconnect. Utility downtime was coordinated; a portable generator can be made available for limited power during outages upon request.
- Recessed lighting package: Installed ten 6-inch recessed can lights and added a new interior switch for convenient control.
- Ceiling fans: Wired and installed two customer-supplied ceiling fans on existing boxes/circuits.
- Exterior LED floods: Furnished, wired, and installed two energy-efficient LED floodlights for improved outdoor illumination.
- Dedicated GFCI circuits (outdoor living):
- 20A GFCI-protected circuit for a back-porch hood fan
- 15A GFCI-protected circuit for a beverage center
- 15A dedicated circuit for bar outlets and a TV outlet on the back porch
- Porch and patio heating: Wired and installed five 3000W heaters on the back porch and one 6000W heater at the patio area for year-round comfort.
- Hot tub power: Installed a 50A disconnect with GFCI protection for a future hot tub. The builder coordinated trenching from the home to the hot tub location.
- Feeder and manpower: Ran SER 4/0 feeder where required and provided a qualified crew to keep the project on schedule.
Why upgrade to 400 amps in Charlotte?
Modern homes and outdoor living spaces demand more power. A 400A service adds essential capacity for high-wattage loads like multiple heaters and a hot tub while helping prevent nuisance tripping and voltage drop. It also positions the property for future additions such as EV chargers, workshops, or expanded outdoor kitchens.
On this project, the upgraded service supports a variety of dedicated circuits, heating elements, and lighting, all balanced across the panel for reliable performance.
Built for safety and code compliance
Outdoor and wet-location circuits were installed with GFCI protection where required. The main service included grounding electrodes and surge protection to help safeguard equipment. Our team sized conductors and overcurrent protection for the connected loads and followed permitting requirements for the City of Charlotte and local authorities.
From clean recessed lighting to robust porch heaters, every component was selected and installed to meet current electrical standards and the project’s performance goals.
