Project overview
Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive service upgrade for homeowner Alison Rosciano in Cary, NC. Led by technician Cody Perry on February 13, 2025, this project transformed an existing 200A setup into a robust 400 amp meter/panel combo with modern safety upgrades and a new dedicated circuit for a sauna heater.
This work falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement services, ensuring reliable capacity, safer grounding, and protection against power surges for today’s high-demand homes in Cary.
What we upgraded
- Meter/panel combo upgrade: Replaced a 200A meter base with a 400A meter/panel combination to support present and future electrical loads.
- Grounding and bonding: Brought the grounding system and bonding up to modern safety standards, including ground rods and grounding electrode conductors.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a comprehensive surge protection system to help defend sensitive electronics and major appliances from voltage spikes.
- Refeed of existing 200A panel: Reconnected the home’s existing 200A panel to the new service for seamless distribution and performance.
- Sauna circuit: Ran a new 60 amp dedicated circuit for a sauna heater and installed a 60A pull-out disconnect for safe, code-compliant servicing.
- Permitting and utility coordination: Pulled the required permit and coordinated the power drop with Duke to keep the project moving efficiently.

Materials and methods that matter
- Heavy-duty conductors (including THHN 2/0) sized for the new 400A service and panel feeds.
- 2-inch PVC conduit with proper fittings, supports, and terminations for clean, durable routing.
- UF #6/2 cable for the 60A sauna circuit, rated for underground or exterior pathways where required.
- New 60A breaker and a code-required, lockable pull-out disconnect to safely isolate the sauna heater.
Every connection, termination, and enclosure was installed to meet current electrical code and local inspection requirements, with clear labeling for easy maintenance.
Safety, code, and inspection notes
As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 updates, some homes may require AFCI breaker upgrades. In certain cases, preexisting wiring conditions (like shared neutrals) can cause immediate AFCI tripping and may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Our team prepares homeowners for these possibilities and addresses them methodically to maintain both safety and reliability.
During service upgrades, temporary power arrangements may be available upon request to help minimize disruption while the utility completes the scheduled power drop.
