Comprehensive Meter Base and Panel Upgrades in Saluda, NC

Touchstone Electric completed a multi-service upgrade for Cabin Fever in Saluda, NC on May 16, 2024. Led by technicians Jake Keele and Theo Coetsee, our Hendersonville branch (Charlotte business unit) delivered a code-compliant installation that prepares the property for a planned future cabin while coordinating all required permits and utility steps.

Service categories: Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement.

Project Goals

This project was designed to establish reliable, expandable electrical service infrastructure that supports today’s needs and anticipates tomorrow’s load. In alignment with the permit notes, no interior electrical work or additional wiring was performed at this time—only the meter bases, exterior panels, permitting, and utility coordination necessary for a future build.

What We Installed

  • 400A Meter Base: We installed a new 400 amp meter base and handled utility scheduling for the power drop. Scope included pulling permits, installing the meter, running conduit to the weatherhead, installing service-entrance cable to the end of the drip loop, and driving ground rods with grounding electrode conductors. As required, a load calculation was prepared and submitted to the power company for approval if a 400A meter was not already present.
  • 600A Meter Base with CT Cabinet: We supplied and installed a 600 amp meter base paired with a CT (current transformer) cabinet, meeting utility specifications for higher-amp services and future capacity.
  • Three Exterior 200A Outdoor Main Panels (Copper): To accommodate both the 400A and 600A services, we installed three weather-rated 200A panels outdoors. Each panel was brought to current electrical code, grounded and bonded, labeled, and integrated with existing service conductors. Panels were set up for inspection as part of the permitted scope.

Temporary power during outages can be supported with a generator upon customer request and scheduling.

Permits, Inspections, and Utility Coordination

Our team managed the end-to-end administrative and safety steps:

  • Electrical permitting: Filed with the county and coordinated required inspections.
  • Utility communication: Scheduled the power drop and provided documentation, including load calculations where applicable.
  • Site readiness: Ensured grounding, bonding, labeling, and exterior equipment placement followed current codes and utility standards.

Built for a Future Cabin

The combination of a 400A meter base, a 600A meter base with CT cabinet, and multiple 200A exterior panels gives the property flexibility for future expansion. This approach allows the upcoming cabin to connect to safe, code-compliant service equipment without reworking the entire service later, saving time and reducing disruption once construction begins.

Safety and Code Compliance

From weatherhead to drip loop, every connection was installed to current code and manufacturer specifications. Ground rods and grounding electrode conductors provide a robust grounding system, and exterior panels were grounded, bonded, and clearly labeled to simplify inspections and future service work.
