Project overview
Our Asheville branch completed a 36kA whole-house surge protection installation for homeowner Christine Vanneck in Hendersonville, NC. On April 1, 2026, technician Aaron Smith mounted a surge protective device (SPD) at the main electrical panel and replaced several 20-amp breakers serving small-appliance circuits. This upgrade helps safeguard the home’s electrical system and sensitive electronics from damaging power spikes.
Following the visit, the customer shared positive feedback about the service experience with our Hendersonville team.
What we installed
- 36kA whole-house surge protector: Installed at the main service panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground, helping protect wiring, outlets, and connected appliances throughout the home.
- 6× 20A tandem breakers: For small-appliance circuits where tandem configurations are appropriate for the panel and load.
- 4× 20A standard breakers: For additional small-appliance branch circuits to support reliable operation and capacity.
The combination of a robust SPD and refreshed 20A breakers offers comprehensive protection and dependable performance for everyday household loads.
Why whole-house surge protection matters in Hendersonville
Even brief, invisible power fluctuations can stress modern electronics and appliances. A properly installed surge protector at the main panel adds a crucial defense layer against:
- Lightning-related surges that travel through utility lines during storms common to Western North Carolina.
- Power grid fluctuations and utility switching that can cause unexpected voltage spikes.
- In-home equipment cycling when large motors (like HVAC systems) start and stop.
Benefits include a reduced risk of damage to refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, HVAC equipment, hardwired lighting, and other sensitive devices—plus potential extension of equipment lifespan by limiting cumulative surge wear.
About the 36kA rating
The 36kA rating indicates the device’s ability to handle significant surge current. Installed at the main panel, it provides whole-home coverage rather than only protecting a single outlet or strip. This centralized approach helps shield every branch circuit, adding peace of mind for homeowners who rely on today’s sensitive electronics and smart-home devices.
Breaker replacements for dependable performance
As part of this project, Aaron replaced six 20A tandem and four 20A standard breakers serving small-appliance circuits. Updating breakers during a surge protection upgrade helps support safe, reliable operation of everyday kitchen and household devices, minimizing nuisance trips and providing consistent protection at the panel.
Warranty and coverage notes
The installed surge protector includes manufacturer-backed coverage for certain home appliances when properly connected. As with most surge protection warranties, claims are typically secondary to your homeowner’s insurance, direct lightning strikes are excluded, and items like security systems and medical equipment are not covered. Ask our team for details specific to your device and home.
