3-Phase to 200A Single-Phase Service and Meter Upgrade in Springdale, SC
Palmetto Renovations of Columbia, Inc. chose Touchstone Electric to modernize a commercial-style 3-phase, 400-amp service to a residential-friendly 200-amp single-phase system in Springdale. Working from our Columbia branch, our team delivered a clean, code-compliant upgrade that boosts reliability, safety, and future flexibility for the property.
Technicians on site: Tyler Harris, Aaron Smith, Theo Coetsee, Johann Fischer, and Alec Saikal.
Scope of Work Completed
We replaced legacy equipment and streamlined the service to a robust, high-quality 200A single-phase setup with an exterior disconnect and a premium copper meter/panel combination.
- Service conversion: Decommissioned the existing 3-phase, 400A service and converted to a 200A single-phase service tailored for residential usage.
- 200A copper meter/panel combo (feed-thru): Installed a premium copper meter/panel assembly with exterior disconnect to simplify emergency shutoff and enhance safety.
- Grounding and bonding: Installed ground rods and grounding electrode conductors, and properly bonded equipment to meet current electrical codes.
- 200A indoor copper main panel: Brought the panel up to current code, grounded and bonded, reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits, and clearly labeled the new panel.
- Riser and weatherhead assembly: Installed a new riser with weatherhead using IMC conduit, straps, roof boot, and new service entrance cable from the meter to the weatherhead for a durable, weather-ready connection.
- Permitting and utility coordination: Scheduled the power drop with the utility, pulled permits, and coordinated inspections to keep the project moving smoothly.
- Surge protection: Included a whole-home surge protector with a $10,000 connected equipment warranty for added peace of mind.
Why Copper Panels for This Upgrade?
For this project, we installed a 200A copper main panel and a copper meter/panel combo. Copper conducts better and runs cooler under load, offering long-term durability. The premium copper panel carries a 50-year warranty, significantly outpacing the 20-year transferable warranty common with standard (aluminum) panel options. The result is a safer, longer-lasting service upgrade that stands up to Springdale’s demands.
Included Services vs. Additional Considerations
We tailor every service upgrade to the property’s needs. Here’s what was covered on this Springdale project, plus items that may be addressed separately depending on site conditions.
- Included on this job: Utility scheduling, permitting, copper meter/panel combo with exterior disconnect, copper 200A indoor main panel, grounding system, labeling, riser with weatherhead and service entrance cable, and surge protection.
- Available during outage: A temporary generator for limited power use upon request.
- May be billed separately as needed: Breakers, feeder and conduit runs to remote/main panels, or other site-specific materials not part of the base scope.
Code Compliance and AFCI Notes (NEC 2020)
As more local inspectors adopt NEC 2020, some circuits may require arc-fault (AFCI) protection. Upgrading to AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping until corrected. In those cases, additional diagnostic work (for example, opening fixtures to isolate shared neutrals) may be needed to bring the system fully into compliance. Our team explains findings as we go so you know exactly what’s required and why.
