Touchstone Electric completed a precise outlet relocation project for Import Paint and Body in Charlotte, NC. On April 4, 2025, our Charlotte branch (Matthews) dispatched technician Patrick Burke to reorganize power access in a busy workshop. The scope centered on Outlets & Switches service, specifically Outlet Installation & Repair tasks that improve safety, accessibility, and workflow.
The customer requested a 3-phase outlet relocation from beneath the electrical panel to the opposite side of the workshop, along with moving two standard receptacle outlets to better serve daily operations. Our team executed these changes while maintaining code-compliant practices and minimizing downtime for the workspace.
Scope of work
- Relocated an existing 3-phase outlet to the other side of the workshop for better equipment access and cord management.
- Moved two standard outlets to positions that align with the customer’s workflow and tool placement.
- Ran new #10 THHN copper conductors (approximately 140 feet) sized for 30-amp circuits, with proper identification and secure terminations.
- Labeled the relocated and moved outlets to clearly indicate circuit information for future maintenance.
- Verified proper voltage, grounding, and polarity at each device after relocation and move.
Every connection was tightened to manufacturer torque specifications and checked to ensure reliable, safe performance under typical workshop loads.
Code-focused materials and methods
For this project, we selected #10 THHN conductors appropriate for 30-amp applications commonly used with small sub-panels and larger appliances. Our technician ensured correct color identification across all conductors and clean terminations at the device and panel ends. These steps help reduce heat at connection points, support consistent phase balance on multi-wire runs, and promote long-term reliability.
Relocating the 3-phase outlet away from beneath the panel also improves day-to-day access around equipment. Consolidating outlets where they’re actually needed reduces extension cord use and trip hazards, and it positions receptacles for safer operation of high-demand tools and machinery.
