Project overview

Our Matthews-based Charlotte branch completed a comprehensive outlets and switches upgrade for homeowner Jim Kasprzak in Concord, NC on March 11, 2026. Led by technician Will Cruz, the project focused on adding two new 240V outlets on dedicated circuits, expanding general-use receptacles, optimizing panel space, and enhancing protection with a whole-home surge protector.

Scope of work completed

  • Two 240V outlets on dedicated circuits to support high-demand appliances. These are protected by new double-pole breakers: one 50A and one 30A, sized for their respective loads.
  • Seven quad outlet stations built from 14 standard duplex receptacles, providing abundant, convenient plug-in capacity:
    • Three quads on a new 20A dedicated circuit (left wall)
    • Four quads tapping into an existing circuit (right wall)
  • Panel additions to support new circuits and maximize space: a standard 20A breaker and a 20A tandem breaker were installed alongside the new 240V breakers.
  • Conduit and conductors run in EMT with THHN wiring, properly sized for 20A, 30A, and 50A circuits to ensure safe operation and future reliability.
  • Whole-home surge protector installed at the main panel to help safeguard sensitive electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.

Materials and methods

To deliver a clean, code-compliant finish, our team installed EMT conduit in 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch, and 1-inch sizes with the appropriate fittings, connectors, and supports. We pulled THHN copper conductors in #12, #10, and #6 gauges, matching conductor size to breaker capacity and anticipated load. This approach improves durability, provides mechanical protection, and simplifies future maintenance or expansions.

  • Dedicated 20A branch circuits for general-use receptacles using #12 THHN in EMT
  • 30A and 50A two-pole circuits for 240V outlets using #10 and #6 THHN respectively
  • Neat routing and secure mounting to keep pathways accessible and organized

We also completed two major appliance connections during the visit, aligning the receptacle type and conductor size with the appliance specifications and breaker ratings.

Why dedicated 240V circuits matter

  • Safety: Properly sized two-pole breakers and dedicated conductors reduce overheating and nuisance trips.
  • Performance: Appliances like ranges, dryers, EV chargers, and HVAC equipment operate more efficiently on dedicated 240V circuits.
  • Code compliance: Meeting local and national electrical code keeps your system reliable and inspection-ready.
  • Room to grow: Upgraded capacity makes future additions easier and more economical.

Enhanced protection with a surge protector

We installed a whole-home surge protector at the main electrical panel to help mitigate damaging voltage spikes from lightning, utility fluctuations, or large appliances cycling on and off. Panel-mounted surge protection adds an important layer of defense for your home’s wiring and connected devices.
