Project overview
Our Charlotte team, serving the area from our Matthews branch, completed a safe, clean 20-amp GFCI outlet installation and dedicated circuit upgrade for homeowner Maureen Leary in Dallas, NC. The work was completed on October 24, 2024, by lead technician Josh Key. This project falls under our Outlets & Switches and Outlet Installation & Repair services.
Scope of work completed
- 20A tandem breaker: Installed a panel-approved tandem breaker to add a new 20-amp circuit while maximizing available panel space.
- 25 ft of NM-B 12/2 Romex: Routed and secured 12/2 wiring appropriate for 20-amp circuits, including necessary junction hardware.
- Professional wire fishing: Carefully fished the wire through finished areas to minimize wall openings and preserve the home’s appearance.
- GFCI receptacle installation: Installed and labeled a new GFCI outlet with a matching cover, line/load configured and function-tested.
- 10 ft of 1/2 in. PVC conduit: Added surface-mounted protection with connectors, supports, and fittings where needed for durability and safety.
All components were torqued to spec, neatly terminated, and the new circuit was clearly labeled at the panel for easy identification.
Why this upgrade matters
- Dedicated 20-amp capacity: Supports higher-demand devices with the correct wire gauge and breaker rating.
- Shock protection: GFCI technology helps protect people by rapidly cutting power in the event of a ground fault.
- Clean, code-conscious routing: Wire fishing and conduit keep the installation tidy and protected while following best practices.
- Smart panel utilization: A tandem breaker provides a compliant way to add a circuit in panels that accept tandems, helping avoid unnecessary panel expansions.
How we completed the job
After confirming panel compatibility and identifying the best path for the run, Josh mapped the route for the new 12/2 cable to reach the GFCI location with minimal disruption. The team fished approximately 25 feet of cable through finished spaces, installed protective PVC conduit for exposed segments, and mounted the new 20-amp GFCI receptacle with a clean, finished cover. We then installed the 20A tandem breaker, performed continuity and polarity checks, tested GFCI trip and reset functions, verified breaker operation under load, and labeled the new circuit at the panel.
