Project overview: dedicated 20A power for a Charlotte bonus room

Our Charlotte team completed a clean, safe, and code-compliant upgrade for homeowner Howard Goldberg by installing two new 20-amp circuits to reliably power a bonus room. Performed by technician Christian Cedillos and supported from our Matthews branch, this project ensured the space has the capacity it needs for present and future devices without nuisance tripping.

Completion date: December 2, 2025 | Service area: Charlotte, NC | Categories: Panels & Service Upgrades and Circuit Breaker Repair & Replacement

What we installed

  • Two dedicated 20-amp circuits: Sized with 12 AWG conductors to support outlets and higher-draw devices in the bonus room.
  • New breakers in the existing panel: Added two 20A standard breakers and clearly labeled them for easy identification.
  • Standard duplex outlets: Installed two new receptacles with covers to provide convenient access to power.
  • EMT conduit and THHN conductors: Utilized 3/4-inch EMT with #12 THHN conductors for durable, protected runs where needed.
  • NM-B 12/2 Romex: Transitioned to NM-B cable within finished areas to maintain a tidy appearance and code-compliant routing.

This combination balances durability, accessibility, and a clean finished look—ideal for bonus rooms where dependable power and a neat install both matter.

Materials and methods

  • Approx. 60 ft NM-B 12/2 Romex: For in-wall and finished-space routing where permitted.
  • Approx. 40 ft 3/4-inch EMT conduit: With appropriate straps, connectors, and fittings for secure support and protection.
  • Approx. 40 ft #12 THHN conductors: Pulled in EMT to maintain conductor protection and performance.
  • Two 20A standard breakers: Matched to panel specifications for safe operation.
  • Two standard receptacles with covers: Professionally mounted and aligned for a clean finish.

We followed best practices for bending and securing EMT, maintained proper conductor sizing for 20-amp circuits, and protected terminations. All new devices and panel spaces were labeled for clarity.

Safety, testing, and code compliance

Our team delivered a code-conscious installation from start to finish. We verified correct polarity, grounding continuity, and breaker operation, and ensured fixtures, conduit, and cable supports were installed to current standards. The result is a bonus room with dedicated capacity that reduces overload risk and improves everyday reliability.

  • Proper circuit sizing with 12 AWG conductors for 20A loads
  • Secure, supported EMT with compliant fittings and terminations
  • Neat device installation and clear panel labeling

Benefits for the homeowner

  • Reduced tripping and overloads: Dedicated 20A circuits handle higher-demand equipment with ease.
  • Cleaner, more usable space: Thoughtful receptacle placement and tidy finishes elevate the room’s functionality.
  • Future-ready: Capacity for additional devices without reworking the electrical system.

If you’re converting a bonus room or adding electronics that strain existing outlets, new circuits and properly matched breakers are the safest, most reliable solution.
