Project overview
On January 7, 2026, our Raleigh branch completed a dedicated appliance circuit upgrade for a homeowner in Graham, NC. Licensed Touchstone Electric technician Jared Mata installed a new 20-amp breaker, ran approximately 40 feet of 12/2 NM-B wiring, and added a properly rated receptacle connection for a customer-supplied small appliance. The work was completed to modern electrical standards for a safe, reliable result.
This service falls under our Outlets & Switches expertise, with a focus on Outlet Installation & Repair for higher-demand appliances that require their own dedicated circuits.
What we installed
- 20-amp standard breaker dedicated to the new appliance circuit, correctly matched to panel type and secured to manufacturer torque specs.
- ~40 ft of 12/2 NM-B (Romex), routed with proper support and protection. The run included any required junction box(es) to maintain accessibility and code compliance.
- Appliance connection via a correctly rated receptacle or hard-wired termination for the customer’s appliance, as appropriate for the equipment listing and location.
Note: The appliance install included the receptacle or hard-wiring connection; the breaker and feeder were addressed as separate scope items to ensure the circuit is dedicated and properly protected.
Why a dedicated 20A appliance circuit?
Many modern small appliances draw substantial current, especially during startup. A dedicated 20-amp circuit with 12-gauge wiring helps prevent nuisance breaker trips, reduces voltage drop under load, and supports manufacturer requirements. It also aligns with National Electrical Code guidance for small appliance and specialty circuits in kitchens, garages, and utility areas where demand can be higher.
By isolating the appliance on its own circuit, you improve performance and safety while minimizing the risk of overloading general-purpose outlets elsewhere in the home.
How we ensure safety and code compliance
- Load and panel review: Verified available capacity and an appropriate breaker position before installation.
- Correct overcurrent protection: Installed a properly matched 20A breaker for 12/2 NM-B conductors.
- Secure cable routing: Fastened NM-B within code-required intervals, protected at penetrations, and maintained proper bend radius.
- Box and device terminations: Used a box with adequate fill, solid equipment grounding, and a receptacle/connection rated for the circuit and appliance.
- Labeling and testing: Labeled the new circuit at the panel and function-tested the receptacle/connection with the appliance powered on.
- Protection verification: Confirmed requirements for GFCI/AFCI protection based on location and ensured the finished installation aligned with current code.
Every step is performed with attention to detail so homeowners in Graham can count on dependable, long-term operation from their new outlet and circuit.
