200A Service Upgrade, Meter Base + Subpanel in Mint Hill, NC
Our Charlotte team, based out of the Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive 200-amp service upgrade for homeowner Brandon Suckow in Mint Hill, NC. Led by technician Ben Lively and completed on August 29, 2024, this project brought the home’s electrical service and distribution up to modern standards for safety, reliability, and future capacity.

What We Installed
- New 200A meter/main combo: We coordinated the utility power drop, pulled the electrical permit, and installed a new meter/panel combination to consolidate and modernize the service equipment. The scope included conduit to the weatherhead, service entrance cable to the drip loop, and new grounding electrode conductors with ground rods. We labeled the new panel for clarity and future maintenance.
- Service mast and weatherhead: Installed a new mast and weatherhead assembly to provide a durable, code-compliant connection point for utility service conductors.
- 200A interior subpanel: We replaced the interior distribution panel with a 200-amp unit, brought it to current electrical code, properly grounded and bonded the panel, and reconnected existing circuits. The panel was clearly labeled and prepared for inspection.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a surge protective device at the service equipment to help safeguard sensitive electronics and major appliances from voltage spikes.
- Upgraded grounding system: Enhanced grounding and bonding to improve fault-clearing performance and overall system safety.
- New feeders and conductors: Utilized approximately 25 feet of SER 4/0 (4-wire) aluminum service entrance cable for the feed between equipment as required.
- New breakers: Installed the appropriately rated breakers for key loads and branch circuits, including 2× 50A, 2× 30A double-pole, 4× 20A, and 7× 15A breakers.
- Permitting and coordination: Filed the electrical permit with the county and scheduled the utility cutover to minimize downtime. Power was temporarily disconnected during the changeover; a generator was available upon request for limited use during the outage.
