200A Panel Upgrade and Meter Service Replacement in Monroe, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Matthews branch, part of our Charlotte service team, completed a comprehensive 200-amp service upgrade for homeowner Nancy Beck in Monroe, NC. On April 11, 2025, our technician, Viktor Opalko, replaced the exterior meter/service equipment, upgraded the interior distribution, improved grounding, added surge protection, and clearly labeled circuits for long-term safety and convenience.
Project Highlights
- New 200A meter/panel combo: Installed modern service equipment to meet current load needs and improve reliability.
- Riser with weatherhead: Added a new service riser and weatherhead for a durable overhead service connection.
- Interior panel replacement: Upgraded the main interior panel and provided a clean, organized layout.
- Outdoor midsize subpanel: Installed a 12/24-circuit, up-to-125A subpanel for future expansion and dedicated loads.
- Grounding system: Drove new ground rods (typically 8 ft) and bonded grounding electrode conductors back to the service for code-compliant fault paths.
- Whole-home surge protection: Added a service-rated surge protective device to divert transient voltage to ground and protect connected equipment.
- Permits and power coordination: Pulled the electrical permit and coordinated the temporary utility power drop to complete the work safely.
- Panel labeling: Clearly labeled all circuits for straightforward identification and future maintenance.
Breaker Configuration and Circuiting
To support everyday usage and dedicated appliances, we installed and configured breakers matched to the home’s loads:
- 8 × 15A standard breakers for lighting and general branch circuits
- 5 × 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
- 2 × 30A double-pole breakers for higher-demand equipment (e.g., dryer or water heater)
- 2 × 50A standard breakers for ranges, HVAC, EV charging, or similar loads
- 1 × 100A two-pole breaker feeding the new subpanel
All terminations were torqued to specification, and circuits were balanced to promote efficient operation and reduce nuisance tripping.
Code, Safety, and Inspection Notes
- NEC 2020 readiness: As local inspectors increasingly enforce NEC 2020, some existing circuits may require AFCI upgrades. In certain homes, preexisting conditions like shared neutrals can cause immediate tripping and may require diagnostic time to resolve.
- Grounding and bonding: The new ground rods and grounding electrode conductors were installed within typical distance requirements and secured with appropriate clamps for lasting, low-impedance connections.
- Utility and permitting: Our team scheduled the power drop and filed the electrical permit to keep the project compliant from start to finish.
- Temporary power option: Upon request, we can make a generator available for limited use during scheduled outages.
Surge Protection Coverage
The installed whole-home surge protector helps shield the home’s electrical system and hardwired devices from voltage spikes caused by lightning events, grid fluctuations, or cycling equipment. The device includes a 3-year, up-to-$10,000 connected equipment coverage as provided by the manufacturer. Coverage is secondary to existing insurance, excludes direct lightning strikes, and does not include security systems or medical equipment.
