200A Panel Upgrade and Meter Base Replacement in Simpsonville, SC

Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive service upgrade for homeowner Marilynn Ledford in Simpsonville, SC. Our Greenville team, based out of our Taylors branch, replaced the aging electrical service with a modern 200 amp system, installed new safety devices, and handled all permitting and inspections. The project was completed on May 3, 2024 by technicians Tyler Harris and Danny Bishop.

Project Overview

This project focused on boosting capacity, reliability, and life-safety protection for a Simpsonville residence. The existing equipment had limited room for future growth and lacked the modern protection required in damp areas and living spaces. By upgrading to a 200A service and refreshing the protection devices, we delivered a safer, code-compliant electrical system built to support today’s home demands.

What We Upgraded

  • New 200A meter base: Coordinated with the power provider, installed a new meter can, updated conduit to the weatherhead, and installed new service entrance conductors. Grounding electrodes and conductors were verified and updated for a safe, low-impedance fault path.
  • New 200A interior main panel (indoor): Replaced the existing panel, properly grounded and bonded the enclosure, reconnected service conductors, and relabeled all circuits for clarity and future maintenance.
  • New breakers and protection: Installed a balanced mix of standard breakers for major appliances and dedicated circuits, including 20A, 30A (double-pole), 40A, and 50A breakers to match existing loads.
  • GFCI protection for damp locations: Added 15A GFCI protection to serve a crawl space dehumidifier and sump pump for enhanced shock protection where moisture is present.
  • Crawl space circuit work: Extended a circuit in the crawl space and installed a new receptacle to support the homeowner’s equipment needs.
  • Hardwired smoke/CO detector: Added a new life-safety device on existing wiring for continuous, reliable monitoring without battery-only limitations.

Permitting, Inspection, and Code Compliance

All work was performed to current electrical code standards. Touchstone Electric pulled the required electrical permit for this upgrade, coordinated the utility service interruption and reconnection, and arranged the final inspection. The upgrade passed inspection, giving the homeowner confidence that the system is safe, compliant, and documented.

Benefits for the Homeowner

  • More capacity and room to grow: A 200A service supports modern HVAC, appliances, EV charging, and future projects without constant breaker trips.
  • Improved safety: Correct grounding/bonding, GFCI protection in the crawl space, and a hardwired smoke/CO detector reduce shock and fire risks.
  • Cleaner layout and labeling: A newly labeled panel makes it easy to identify circuits for maintenance and emergencies.
  • Reliability: Updated components and secure terminations help minimize nuisance trips and protect sensitive equipment.

Our Process for Simpsonville Service Upgrades

  • Assessment and planning: We review existing loads, future needs, and safety concerns to specify the right panel and breakers.
  • Utility and permit coordination: We schedule the power drop and pull permits to keep the project smooth and compliant.
  • Professional installation: Old components are removed, new service equipment is installed, and all conductors are properly terminated, grounded, and bonded.
  • Final inspection and handoff: We host the inspection, verify operation of new devices, and walk the homeowner through the updated panel labeling and features.
