200A Panel Upgrade and Meter Base Replacement in Fort Mill, SC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating out of our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive 200 amp service upgrade for homeowner Ken Eppley in Fort Mill, SC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project was finished on January 28, 2025 and included a new exterior main breaker panel, a new 200A meter base, and a dedicated feeder to the kitchen subpanel. We handled permitting and inspections from start to finish for a smooth, code-compliant result.

Scope of Work

  • New 200A exterior main panel (outdoor-rated) – Brought the service equipment up to current electrical code, complete with grounding, bonding, labeling, and reconnection of existing circuits.
  • New 200A meter base – Coordinated with the utility for the power drop and installed new grounding electrode conductors and ground rods.
  • Feeder to kitchen subpanel – Installed approximately 60 feet of 1/0 SER (4-wire) from the new main panel to the existing subpanel for safe, balanced load distribution.
  • Subpanel breakers – Included a 100A two-pole breaker for the subpanel and a selection of standard 20A and 30A breakers as required for small appliances and major equipment.
  • Permitting and inspection – Electrical permit filed and inspection scheduled and supported by our team.

To route the new feeder cleanly, drywall was opened beneath the panel location and prepared for a neat installation path. We also provided options for temporary power via a generator during the scheduled utility outage, if needed.

Inspector-Ready and Code-Focused

Our upgrade process emphasizes safety and long-term reliability for Fort Mill homes. The panel is properly grounded and bonded, circuits are clearly labeled, and service conductors are securely terminated. As jurisdictions continue to adopt newer NEC requirements, inspectors may sometimes require AFCI upgrades on certain circuits; our team is prepared to advise on those scenarios if they arise during inspection. This project was built to meet current standards and streamline the sign-off process.

Special Notes on Existing Garage Feed

Per the agreed scope, the direct-burial wire feeding the detached garage was temporarily disconnected so it would not be part of the inspection. After the inspection and project completion, the homeowner may have a qualified party reconnect that feed. Touchstone Electric did not reconnect the garage wire as part of this job.

What This Upgrade Means for Your Fort Mill Home

  • Increased capacity – A modern 200 amp service supports today’s appliances, HVAC, and potential EV charging or future expansions.
  • Improved safety – New equipment, proper bonding/grounding, and organized terminations reduce hazards and nuisance issues.
  • Cleaner distribution – A dedicated 1/0 SER feeder to the kitchen subpanel helps balance loads and simplify future maintenance.
  • Convenience – Clear labeling, utility coordination, and full permitting help minimize homeowner disruption.
