Our Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a full 200A service upgrade for homeowner Steve Carter in Denver, NC on 03/26/2026. Led by technicians Will Cruz and Danny Bishop, the project replaced the aging service equipment with a new 200 amp meter base, an exterior 200 amp main breaker panel, and a 100 amp interior subpanel in the laundry room. The work was permitted, inspected, and brought up to current electrical code, with enhanced grounding and whole-home surge protection.
Scope of work completed
- Electrical permit and inspection: Filed the required county electrical permit and coordinated final inspection.
- 200A meter base: Installed a new 200 amp meter can, scheduled the utility power drop, and installed ground rods with continuous grounding electrode conductors.
- 200A outdoor main panel (aluminum buss): Replaced and labeled the main breaker panel, reconnected service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits, and properly grounded and bonded the cabinet.
- 100A interior subpanel (laundry room, aluminum buss): Installed a mid-sized subpanel to organize and expand capacity, fed by a new 100A two-pole breaker.
- Surge protection: Included a $10k warranty surge protector for added whole-home protection.
- Grounding upgrade: Drove a new ground rod (typically about 8 ft) and replaced the grounding electrode conductor with a continuous run to the main service panel (up to 25 ft).
To support code-required protection and dedicated loads, we installed and configured the following breakers:
- 1x Breaker - 100A (2-pole) for the subpanel feeder
- 1x Breaker - 15A GFCI for kitchen receptacles, exterior locations, crawl spaces, basements, and garage lighting
- 4x Breaker - 15A standard for bathroom lighting and general branch circuits
- 1x Breaker - 20A GFCI for bathroom, dining room, laundry room, garage receptacles, and exterior/crawl/basement areas
- 7x Breaker - 20A standard for small appliance circuits
- 3x Breaker - 30A (double pole) for larger loads such as dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger
- 2x Breaker - 40A standard for high-demand equipment
- 2x Breaker - 20A (double pole) for select small-appliance or specialty loads
Code compliance, permits, and inspector notes
As local inspectors implement NEC 2020, they may require upgrades to AFCI protection on specific circuits. Adding AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting issues (for example, shared neutrals) that may cause nuisance tripping and require additional diagnostic time to locate and correct. We plan for these possibilities and communicate findings clearly during inspection.
Permit details: The electrical permit was issued for this scope. Every jurisdiction has different requirements; the included permit covers electrical work only. If a Historic Preservation permit, Environmental/Septic permit, Zoning application, separate subcontractor permit, Builder’s permit, or other non-electrical permit is required, it is not included. If additional permits are needed, we will notify the homeowner and provide next steps or pricing for processing those items.
Homeowner experience and site considerations
During a service upgrade, power must be temporarily disconnected. Upon request, Touchstone can make a generator available for limited power usage during the outage. For subpanel replacements in finished areas, some Sheetrock may need to be cut; Touchstone Electric is not responsible for Sheetrock repairs or painting.
