Project overview: 200A panel replacement and surge protection in Durham, NC
On December 16, 2025, Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive electrical panel upgrade for homeowner Hafsa Murad in Durham, NC. Led by technician Jared Mata, this project included replacing the main service panel with a modern 200-amp unit, adding whole-home surge protection, upgrading grounding, and coordinating all permitting and inspection requirements.
This service falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades category and was delivered with our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty for added peace of mind.
Scope of work completed
- Permitting and inspection: Pulled the required electrical permit and coordinated the city inspection.
- Main panel replacement (200A, indoor): Removed the existing panel and installed a new 200-amp panel featuring an aluminum bus. The new panel was properly grounded and bonded, the service entrance cable was reconnected, and all existing circuits were reconnected and clearly labeled. Main lugs were replaced as part of the installation.
- Panel warranty: The panel includes a 20-year transferable warranty on the bus assembly.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a surge protection system with a $10,000 equipment protection warranty for 3 years to help defend the home’s electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.
- Grounding upgrade: Drove a new ground rod and installed a continuous grounding electrode conductor to the main service panel, improving system safety and fault-clearing performance.
- New breakers installed: To modernize protection and capacity across the home, we installed:
- 1 × 50A standard breaker (range, heat, subpanel, or EV charging)
- 1 × 40A standard breaker (dryer, water heater, A/C, spa, or EV charging)
- 3 × 30A double-pole standard breakers
- 11 × 20A standard breakers (general-purpose/small appliance circuits)
- 6 × 15A standard breakers (lighting and standard branch circuits)
- 2 × 15A GFCI breakers (kitchen receptacles, exterior, crawlspace, basement, or garage lighting)
During the scheduled outage for the panel swap, Touchstone Electric can make a generator available for limited power usage, helping maintain essential household functions while work is completed.
Safety, code, and homeowner benefits
- Code compliance: The new panel brings the service equipment up to current electrical code standards and enhances overall system safety.
- Clear labeling and organization: Each circuit was identified and labeled to simplify future service and troubleshooting.
- Grounding and bonding: Upgraded grounding and proper bonding help reduce shock hazards and improve breaker performance during faults.
- Whole-home surge protection: A dedicated device at the main panel provides a first line of defense against damaging power surges.
As local inspectors continue adopting 2020 NEC requirements, some homes may be required to add or convert circuits to AFCI protection. In certain homes with pre-existing conditions (for example, a shared neutral), newly installed AFCI breakers may trip until the underlying wiring issue is corrected. Troubleshooting such conditions can require additional diagnostic time. Our team communicates these possibilities up front so homeowners know what to expect.
