200A Outdoor Panel Upgrade & Subpanel in Denver, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a full outdoor main panel replacement and subpanel installation for homeowner Fred Chen in Denver, NC. On March 27, 2026, technician Christian Cedillos modernized the home’s electrical distribution to improve safety, reliability, and capacity for present and future loads.

This project is part of our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services. The work was fully permitted and inspected for local code compliance.

Scope of Work

  • Removed the aging outdoor main panel and installed a new 200A main lug panel with clear circuit labeling.
  • Grounded and bonded the panel and reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits to current standards.
  • Installed whole-home surge protection to help safeguard sensitive electronics and HVAC equipment.
  • Added a small outdoor subpanel (4/8, up to 125A) to serve nearby loads and future expansion.
  • Installed new breakers and organized circuits for safe operation and easier maintenance.
  • Obtained all required permits and coordinated the inspection with the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Provided temporary generator availability for limited power during the planned outage.

Code and Safety Considerations

As inspectors continue implementing the 2020 NEC, some homes may be required to upgrade certain circuits to AFCI protection. In rare cases, adding AFCI can reveal preexisting wiring issues (such as shared neutrals) that cause nuisance tripping. If discovered, these issues may require additional diagnostic time to locate and correct. Our team addresses such findings methodically to ensure long-term safety and performance.

Installed Breakers and Added Capacity

  • 100A 2-pole breaker feeding the new subpanel
  • 50A standard breaker for higher-demand appliances (range, heater/furnace, EV-ready, etc.)
  • 30A 2-pole standard breaker for equipment such as dryers, water heaters, or condensers
  • Four 20A standard breakers for small-appliance and general-purpose circuits
  • One 15A standard breaker for lighting and standard branch circuits

This configuration provides dependable power distribution today while keeping room for future additions like a spa, workshop circuits, or an EV charger.
