200A Service Upgrade and Subpanel Installation in Union, SC
Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200 amp meter/panel upgrade with a new service riser and an interior subpanel for homeowner Neal Nunan in Union, SC. This project, performed by our Charlotte team based out of Matthews, falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement services. The goal was to increase available capacity, improve safety, and bring the home’s electrical system in line with current code requirements.
Scope of Work
- 200A meter/panel combo: Furnished and installed a new combination meter base and main panel. We coordinated the utility power drop and filed the required electrical permit with the county to ensure a smooth, code-compliant installation.
- New service riser and weatherhead: Installed a new riser assembly and weatherhead with proper fittings, supports, and terminations to protect conductors and meet utility and code requirements.
- 2-inch PVC conduit with LBs and strapping: Added conduit, connectors, and LB bodies as applicable, with secure mounting and spacing for a clean, durable installation.
- Interior subpanel (midsized 12/24 up to 125A): Mounted and wired a new indoor subpanel to expand circuit capacity and provide better distribution for interior loads.
- 4-wire SER feeder from main to subpanel: Ran SER 1/0 four-conductor cable between the main panel and subpanel to properly separate neutrals and grounds per modern standards.
- Subfeed and branch breakers: Installed appropriate 125A 2-pole protection for the subpanel feed and new 20A breakers to serve small-appliance and general-use circuits as needed.
- Rerun feeder for water heater: Replaced and rerouted approximately 6/2 NM-B cable to the electric water heater to integrate it with the new subpanel layout.
- Grounding system improvements: Drove new ground rods and connected a grounding electrode conductor to the main service, ensuring a low-impedance path for fault current and improved surge performance.
Upon completion, we verified terminations, labeling, torque settings, and bonding to prepare the installation for inspection and reliable day-to-day operation.
Safety, Compliance, and Inspection Readiness
Upgrading to a 200A service provides headroom for future appliances, HVAC, EV charging, and remodeling while enhancing safety. The new four-wire feeder to the subpanel maintains isolated neutrals and grounds, and the upgraded grounding electrode system helps protect people and equipment.
As jurisdictions implement NEC 2020, inspectors may require the addition of AFCI protection on certain circuits. In some homes, installing AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring conditions such as shared neutrals, which can cause nuisance tripping until corrected. When these issues arise, we communicate clearly and perform the diagnostic work needed to bring affected circuits into compliance.
