200A Meter/Panel Upgrade and Subpanel Install in Monroe, NC
On April 11, 2025, our Charlotte branch (Matthews location) completed a comprehensive service upgrade in Monroe, NC for contractor Rick Roberts. Technicians Jack Herbert and Viktor Opalko installed a new 200A meter/panel combo with over/under configuration, set a riser with weatherhead, drove new ground rods, added a 200A indoor subpanel, and updated circuit protection to support present and future electrical needs.
Scope of Work
This project combined our Panels & Service Upgrades expertise with a full Meter Base & Service Replacement. Our team coordinated every step from permitting to utility cutover to ensure a smooth and code-compliant installation.
- 200A Meter/Panel Combo (over/under with feed-through lugs): Permits pulled and utility power drop scheduled; new combo installed and set up for clean distribution.
- Riser with Weatherhead: IMC conduit, roof boot, and service entrance cable from the new meter to the weatherhead for a durable overhead service connection.
- Grounding System: New ground rods driven and bonded with grounding electrode conductors; connections secured and inspected.
- 200A Indoor Subpanel: Permitted and installed to expand capacity and improve circuit organization.
- Feeder: Approximately 50 ft of SER 4/0 (4-wire) run from the main panel to the subpanel for a robust 200A feeder.
- Breakers and Labeling: New breakers installed and circuits clearly labeled for safety and serviceability.
- Wire Fishing: About 50 ft of wire fished through finished areas to reach existing circuits with minimal disruption.
- Crew Support: An electrician wireman assisted to keep the project efficient and on schedule.
Breaker Configuration for Reliable Circuits
We balanced circuit loads and added capacity for present appliances and future upgrades. The install included:
- 2× 15A standard breakers for lighting and general use
- 9× 20A standard breakers for kitchen and small appliance circuits
- 1× 20A double‑pole breaker
- 2× 30A double‑pole breakers (commonly used for dryer, water heater, or HVAC)
- 1× 40A standard breaker
- 1× 50A standard breaker (often used for range, heat, EV charger, or a small subpanel)
Every breaker was torqued to manufacturer specs and circuits were labeled for quick identification and maintenance.
Permits, Utility Coordination, and Code Compliance
Touchstone Electric handled permitting and coordinated the temporary power drop with the local utility to minimize downtime. When requested, we can make a generator available for limited power use during the outage window.
Monroe-area inspections are increasingly aligned with NEC 2020. In some cases, inspectors may require AFCI upgrades on certain branch circuits. Because AFCI devices can reveal preexisting conditions (such as shared neutrals), troubleshooting may be necessary to isolate and correct those issues. Our team discusses options and next steps if an inspection reveals such conditions.
Why This Upgrade Matters for Monroe Homes
A modern 200A service with a dedicated subpanel supports today’s energy demands—HVAC, kitchen appliances, workshops, and EV charging—while improving safety through updated grounding and overcurrent protection. The new riser, weatherhead, and bonding ensure a durable, weather-resistant service entrance built for long-term reliability.
